Efectos cognoscitivos de los anticonvulsivantes / Cognitive effects of anticonvulsant drugs

RESUMEN

Los trastornos del comportamiento y del aprendizaje constituyen la principal comorbilidad en los pacientes con epilepsia. Varios factores, cada uno con muchas variables que actuan de manera interdependiente uno del otro, son la causa de los problemas cognitivos en esta población. En esta revisión analizamos los diferentes factores que intervienen en los trastornos del aprendizaje en los pacientes con epilepsia, haciendo especial énfasis en los medicamentos anticonvulsivantes. Por último se presentan las conclusiones y sugerencias para el manejo adecuado de los pacientes con epilepsia con el fin de minimizar la posibilidad de problemas de aprendizaje.

ABSTRACT

The behavioral and learning disorders are the main comorbidity in patients with epilepsy. Several factors, each one of them with many dependant variables that interact with each other, are the cause of the cognitive problems in this population. From this review, we analyzed the different items involved in learning disorders of patients with epilepsy, with special emphasis on anticonvulsant medications. Finally conclusions and suggestions are given for the correct treatment of patients with epilepsy to minimize the possibility of learning problems.
