Cerrando la brecha digital en el Perú: educando a personas vivinedo con VIH/SIDA para evaluar la calidad de la información en salud en Internet / Clossing the digital divide in Peru: educating people living with HIV/AIDS to evaluate the quality of health information on the Internet

RESUMEN

Las personas viviendo con VIH/SIDA (PVVS) están usando cada vez más la Internet para encontrar información acerca del cuidado de su salud. La literatura global sobre educación a PVVS en cuanto a tecnologías de información y comunicación (TIC) es limitada. El objetivo del estudio es comunicar la evaluación de un taller ofrecido a PVVS, para analizar la calidad de la información en salud en Internet. Se realizó un taller con computadoras en el cual participaron 25 PVVS de diferentes distritos de Lima durante un día. A los participantes se les aplicó la prueba eHEALS modificada y traducida al español antes (pretest) y después (postest) del taller para evaluar conocimientos y habilidades auto reportadas hacia el uso de TIC en salud. 21 PVVS completaron el pre y postest. Al finalizar el taller, la mayoría de PVVS (95,2 por ciento) estuvieron de acuerdo o completamente de acuerdo en que ellos eran capaces de evaluar las páginas web de salud que hallan en Internet. Se encontró diferencia estadísticamente significativa en cuanto al pre y postest en 6/8 (80 por ciento) de las preguntas de la prueba eHEALS. El taller de un día puede ayudar a PVVS a evaluar la calidad de la información sobre salud en Internet, y puede mejorar sus conocimientos y habilidades auto reportadas hacia el uso de las TIC en salud. El taller puede servir de modelo a otros programas de educación para PVVS.

ABSTRACT

People living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) are increasingly using the Internet to find health information. Global literature about education of PLWHA regarding information and communication technologies (ICTs) is scarce. The objective of this paper is to report the evaluation of a workshop offered to PLWHA to evaluate the quality of the health information available on the Internet. A computer-based workshop was offered to 25 PLWHA from different districts of Lima during one day. A Spanish version of the eHEALS scale was used before (pre-test) and after (post-test) the workshop to assess consumerÆ perceived skills/knowledge at using ICTs for health. 21 PLWHA completed the pre and post-test. At the end of the workshop, most participants (95.2 per cent) agreed or strongly agreed that they were able to evaluate health Web sites on the Internet. A pre and post-test comparison showed significant gains in 6/8-item measure of eHEALS. The one-day workshop could help PLWHA to evaluate the quality of the information available on the Internet, and it might improve their auto-reported knowledge and skills towards the use of ICTs in health. This workshop might serve as a model to othereducational programs for PLWHA.
