Propuesta de una modificación en la formulación del medio agar manitol salado utilizado en el aislamiento de estafilococos de importancia clínica / Proposal of the modified formulation of mannitol salt agar medium used in the isolation of clinically important stafilococci

RESUMEN

Se propuso obtener un producto óptimo, donde se incrementara la velocidad de crecimiento y la diferenciación de los microorganismos en el medio, como resultado de la combinación adecuada de los nutrientes. La rapidez en la identificación y caracterización de un agente infeccioso contribuye a aplicar al paciente una terapia adecuada. El agar manitol salado es un medio altamente selectivo para el aislamiento primario de estafilococos patógenos, cuya composición incluye el alcohol polihidroxílico (manitol). Este sustrato permite la identificación de estafilococos coagulasa-positivos pertenecientes fundamentalmente a la especie Staphylococcus aureus, por su capacidad de fermentar el manitol, característica que ha sido considerada como un índice de patogenicidad. Se realizaron modificaciones en la formulación del medio agar manitol salado, obteniéndose un producto similar al medio de referencia, con características físico-químicas y microbiológicas superiores, sin presentar diferencias significativas (p> 0,05) en comparación con el producto de referencia utilizado.

ABSTRACT

It was recommended to obtain an optimal product, where the growth speed and the differentiation of the microorganisms in the medium would increase, as a result of the adequate combination of the nutrients. The celerity in the identification and characterization of an infectious agent contribute to apply a suitable therapy to the patient. The Mannitol Salt Agar is a highly selective medium for the isolation of pathogenic staphylococci, that includes the mannitol polihidroxyl alcohol in its composition. This substrate allows the identification of coagulase positive staphylococci belonging mainly to the S. aureus species, due to their capacity to ferment mannitol. This characteristic has been considered as a pathogenicity index. Modifications were carried out in the formulation of the Mannitol Salt Agar, getting a product similar to the reference medium, with superior physical-chemical and microbiological characteristics, and without significant differences (p>0.05) in comparison with the reference product used.
