La agrupación y organización de especialistas en áreas determinadas tiene sus antecedentes históricos en la época del Imperio Romano. Esta tradición se difundió por todo el orbe debido a las vantajas que representa para el desarrollo, colaboración, protección e intercambio de conocimientos entre sus integrantes, así como por su valía para actuar como intermediario ante el Estado y para colaborar con éste.
