ABSTRACT
Meningitis is one of the most serious infectious pathologies in pediatrics and it constitutes a true medical emergency. The diligent clinical evaluation, the value of imaging studies before the lumbar puncture, the interpretation of the cerebroespinal fluid and the special identification of the germ by cultures and special tests confirm the definitive diagnosis. The clinical suspicion of an infection of the Central Nervous System (CNS) begins with the history of the patient and the identification of risk factors. The symptoms associated with the meningitis vary with the virulence of the germ and the age of the child. The physical examination must consider the classic triad of fever, rigidity of the neck and alterations of the conscience, which is detected in two thirds of the patients and at least one of these symptoms is present, fever is the most common. The seizure appears in a third of them. Unspecific symptoms can appear, such as headache, nausea, vomits and irritability
