ABSTRACT

SUMMARY:

Obesity is a priority public health problem due to the large number of people affected, its continue growth and its serious health consequences. It is considered a chronic, heterogeneous, complex and multifactorial disease which has experienced a sharp increase in prevalence in both, developed and developing countries. In this work the prevalence of obesity was estimated and bio-sociocultural risk factors, associated with its presence, with special emphasis on diet, were identified. This study included 4328 subjects of both sexes, older than 18 years old and resident in Cordoba city. Nutritional status, consumption habits and patterns of these subjects were investigated by direct measurement techniques (anthropometry) and a recently validated food frequency questionnaire, including qualitative and quantitative information on food intake and another one collecting information of physical activity. Multiple correspondence factorial analysis was conducted. Subsequently, to obtain the odds ratio and 95% confidence intervals, multiple logistic regression models were estimated. The prevalence of obesity and pre-obesity were17 % and 34 % respectively, while overweight was 60 % in men and 45 % in women
