ABSTRACT
PURPOSE:
To evaluate the surgical results of scleral buckling procedure for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment with subretinal traction bands (SRTB).METHODS:
We analyzed the medical records of 25 patients who had undergone only scleral buckling procedures for retinal detachment with SRTB with a minimum follow-up period of 6 months.RESULTS:
Mean patient age was 33.7 years (16~80 years) and mean follow-up period was 15.8 months (6~35 months). Successful anatomic reattachment was achieved in 21 eyes (84%), and postoperative visual acuity improved in 12 eyes (48.0%). As for complications, surgical failure of the primary surgery occurred in 4 eyes (16%), temporary elevation of intraocular pressure in 3 eyes (12%), exposure of silicone sponge in 1 eye (4%), and progression of cataract in 1 eye (4%). The causes of primary failure were remaining subretinal fluid in 3 eyes and proliferative vitreoretinopathy in 1 eye.CONCLUSIONS:
Scleral buckling procedure is recommended as one of the surgical methods in the management of retinal detachments with SRTB in selected cases.
