A CLINICAL STUDY OF PANFACIAL FRACTURES

ABSTRACT

retrospective study of 60 patients with panfacial bone fractures who treated at Wonkwang University Dental Hospital during the period of 1988 to 1997. The results were as follows 1. The age group 21 to 30 years was the most frequently injured (31.7%), and the ratio of men to women was5.71. 2. The major etiologic factors were traffic accident(73.3%), fall down(13.3%), and interpersonal violence(3.3%) in orders. 3. The mean elapsed time from injury to closed reduction with arch-bar wiring was 6.4days and to open reduction was 14.4 days. 4. The frequent fracture sites were Lefort II,III fracture combined mandibular symphysis fracture and zygomatic fracture combined mandibular condylar fracture. 5. Other injuries that were related to panfacial fracture occurred in 56.7%. The major common associated injuries to panfacial fractures were head trauma(44.0%), orthopedic injuries(32.3%), and ophthalmologic injuries(14.7%). 6. The mean period of intermaxillary fixation after open reduction was 17.7day. 7. Open reduction was proceeded mostly from mandible to upward (76.7%). 8. Post-operative complication occurred in 56.7% of the cases, and the most frequent complication was esthetic problem as 38.2% of the cases.
