ABSTRACT
Gut microbiota (GM) of human hosts is the community of microorganisms living in small and, mainly, large intestine of humans. It is composed of various species, including bacteria, fungi, archaea, viruses and protozoa. Accumulating evidence has linked changes in the composition or metabolic profiles of the microbiota with human diseases, such as disorders of the cardiovascular spectrum. Clinical data and animal experiments in recent years have revealed that GM imbalance can worsen the development of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). Also, the physiological state of the host is also influenced by its bioactive metabolites. In this review, we systematically elucidate the relationship between CVDs and GM and its metabolites, and further review the latest research progress on the possible mechanism of action. It is expected that GM regulation can be a new therapeutic target for CVDs.
