ABSTRACT

Games have always been popular for connecting people, from local single-player and couch co-op, to massively multiplayer online. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, remote games that involved and fostered social interactions and connections were a highlight among strategies for staying connected. For this year's games and play SIG, we come together to discuss the relevant and timely topic of social and playful technologies, and how they can be designed to best foster meaningful social connections over a distance. We bring together attendees from not only the games community, but also those in the broader field of CHI focusing on social and playful technologies. © 2023 Owner/Author.

ABSTRACT

Background. Since the beginning of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, most neonatal units around the world have restricted parents’ access, aiming to protect the staff and the babies against the infection. Objective. To evaluate the side effects of the limitation of parents presence with their babies in neonatal units and those related to restrictions on maternity wards access. Method. Literature review. A search using ‘SARS-CoV-2’ and ‘COVID-19’ as keywords combined to ‘neonatal’, ‘NICU’, ‘parents’, ‘family centered care’ and ‘neurodevelopmental care’. Consultation of websites containing updated and summarized scientific literature about the pandemic and its consequences in newborns has also been performed: www.dontforgetthebubles.com and www.seneo.es. The voice of the families has been mainly obtained through the websites of their associations and the social networks. Results. The family-centered care model has shown positive effects on the health of sick newborns and on premature infants’ neurodevelopment. This model of care is under threat if parental access is limited. It has been shown that these restrictions have also adverse effects on breastfeeding and on caregivers’ psychological wellbeing. Data from different neonatal series report a benign course of COVID-19 infection in neonates and preterm babies. Conclusions. At a crucial moment for the implementation of the developmental centered care model in Catalan neonatal units, and with the available data, it is essential to redesign the policies regarding parents who accompany their babies admitted to the units.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Hospital pharmacy services have adapted to the COVID-19 pandemic. The aim of the study is to determine the economic consequences of replacing hospital pharmacy dispensation with other dispensing methods in the context of biological treatments for psoriasis in Spain. METHOD: Multiple dispensation scenarios were evaluated, combining different dispensation frequencies and sites, and telepharmacy followup intervals. Self- injectable biological medicines for psoriasis (interleukin and tumour necrosis factor alpha inhibitors) were included. All costs (in 2020 euros) were considered from the perspective of the National Health System. RESULTS: The annual cost of hospital pharmacy-based dispensations every 4 weeks combined with telepharmacy monitoring at each administration ranged from 194.9 to 2,088.0 per patient. Across the different simulated scenarios, biological medicines associated with the lowest cost were those administered less frequently (every 12 weeks). CONCLUSIONS: In the post-COVID-19 era, new models of hospital pharmaceutical care that include changes in drug dispensation and telepharmacy strategies will have economic consequences for the National Health System that merit consideration.

ABSTRACT

This review describes the pathophysiological mechanisms related to the 2019 Coronavirus infection (COVID-19 or SARS-CoV-2). This virus, discovered in Wuhan-China, had a zoonotic transmission and was later transmitted between humans through aerosols and contaminated surfaces with a high rate of contagion, triggering a Pandemic. Through systematic search in Medline and Embase, studies that point to the general objective were selected. The genome, structure, cell receptor, immune response and spread to other tissues are discussed. In conclusion, the analyzed virus presents factors that influence the severity of the clinical manifestation and the predisposition of older adults and/or comorbidities to present generalized inflammatory phenomena. Although there is evidence of viral presence in the CNS, studies are required to deepen the action of the virus on this and other tissues.

ABSTRACT

Changes that COVID-19 induced in endocrine daily practice as well as the role of endocrine and metabolic comorbidities in COVID-19 outcomes were among the striking features of this last year. The aim of this statement is to illustrate the major characteristics of the response of European endocrinologists to the pandemic including the disclosure of the endocrine phenotype of COVID-19 with diabetes, obesity and hypovitaminosis D playing a key role in this clinical setting with its huge implication for the prevention and management of the disease. The role of the European Society of Endocrinology (ESE) as a reference point of the endocrine community during the pandemic will also be highlighted, including the refocusing of its educational and advocacy activities.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 has completely changed our daily clinical practice as well as our social relations. Many organs and biological systems are involved in SARS-Cov-2 infection, either due to direct virus-induced damage or to indirect effects that can have systemic consequences. Endocrine system is not only an exception but its involvement in COVID-19 is so relevant that an "endocrine phenotype" of COVID-19 has progressively acquired clinical relevance. AIM: We have been appointed by the European Society of Endocrinology (ESE) to update with the current statement ESE members and the whole endocrine community on the emerging endocrine phenotype of COVID-19 and its implication for the prevention and management of the disease. CONCLUSIONS: Diabetes has a major role in this phenotype since it is one of the most frequent comorbidities associated with severity and mortality of COVID-19. Careful management including treatment modifications may be required for protecting our patients rather with known diabetes from the most dangerous consequences of COVID-19 or hospitalized with COVID-19, but also in patients with SARS-CoV-2 induced newly onset diabetes. Obesity increases susceptibility to SARS-CoV-2 and the risk for COVID-19 adverse outcome. Adequate nutritional management needs to be granted to patients with obesity or undernourishment in order to limit their increased susceptibility and severity of COVID-19 infection. Lack of vitamin D, hypocalcemia and vertebral fractures have also emerged as frequent findings in the hospitalized COVID-19 population and may negatively impact on the outcome of such patients. Also, in patients with adrenal insufficiency prompt adaptation of glucocorticoid doses may be needed. Moreover, in this updated statement role of sex hormones as well as peculiar pituitary and thyroid aspects of COVID-19 have been included. Finally, in view of the mass vaccination, potential implications for endocrine patients should be considered.
