ABSTRACT

In this article, we demonstrate how solidarity between member states can have a positive effect on the image of the EU, even if the latter's actions in handling a crisis such as the COVID-19 pandemic are deemed unsatisfactory. Employing data from a special Eurobarometer survey enriched with data from the Oxford's COVID-19 government response tracker, we show that European citizens who are more satisfied with interstate solidarity have to a greater extent a positive image of the EU compared to citizens who are less satisfied. We also show that this effect is further pronounced in the case of EU citizens who are less satisfied with institutional solidarity, which is the solidarity going from EU institutions to the member states. © The Author(s) 2023.

ABSTRACT

The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 affected people mobility worldwide. As a result, both international and domestic tourists almost completely cancelled their bookings, airlines cancelled most of their flights, almost all in-person meetings and events were suspended and PCO’s faced vast economic losses, as their turnover was reduced by over 75% for 2020, with the visitors/attendees decreased by over 90%. The aim of this paper was to investigate the extent to which new technologies were used in organizing and conducting digital events during the pandemic period and their overall impact on the congress market. For this we conducted both a primary and a secondary research;primary data were collected by interviewing the administrative personnel of Hotels, PCO’s, DMC’s, and Audiovisual companies and secondary data were obtained by reviewing journals, historical records, relevant studies conducted by tourism associations and also UNWTO statistics. Our results confirmed that there was a transition of MICE tourism to a new digital environment, in terms of organization of meetings and events and the use of technology throughout their operation. We believe that our study will provide evidence that technology has an important role in conference organization and management in the post-COVID-19 era. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

ABSTRACT

The corona virus pandemic is omnipresent, also in the daily routine of a dermatological practice. We report on a 55-year-old patient who consulted us with toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN). Intensive inquiry initially revealed that he had been in contact with a person with confirmed evidence of a SARS-CoV-2 infection, i.e., he was a K1 contact. However, his two initial corona tests were negative. This prompted nonetheless appropriate precautions when the patient was admitted to hospital. These precautions proved to be correct as a third PCR test was now positive. A subsequent antibody test on him and the contact person confirmed that they both had had the infection. The TEN was possibly triggered by amoxicillin or metronidazole and was successfully treated under in-patient conditions with high doses of systemic steroids and adequate topical treatment. The skin disease healed up entirely.

ABSTRACT

The Mexico-UK Sub-Millimetre Camera for AsTronomy (MUSCAT) is a 1.1-mm band receiver consisting of 1,500 single-colour lumped-element kinetic inductance detectors and is scheduled for deployment to the Large Millimeter Telescope (LMT) after the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. MUSCAT is designed to utilise the full field of view of the LMT's upgraded 50-m primary mirror (approximately 4'). Here we will present the as-measured performance of MUSCAT from the final lab-verification testing prior to shipping to the LMT. We will also explain the overall design of MUSCAT including the novel technologies utilised-such as continuous cooling using sorption coolers and a miniature dilutor, and horn-coupled LEKIDs-for which MUSCAT will provide a first on-sky demonstration.
