ABSTRACT

From the start of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic in 2020, COVID-19 infection in the pediatric population has aroused great attention. This article presents dynamic epidemiological characteristics of COVID-19 infection in pediatric patients from January 2020 to March 2022 in China. These data contributed essential insights and shared experience on the management of COVID-19 in children. To date, the unvaccinated population and events with children need more attention. ABSTRACT

SARS-CoV-2 variants have shown increased transmission capabilities and pandemic to an extent with severe presentation and mortality. The delta variant has been declared as an emerging variant of concern (VOC) by the World Health Organization (WHO) on May 10, 2021. This review summarizes the post-vaccination infection events related to SARS-CoV-2 delta variant outbreaks in many areas of China. The characteristics and measures of delta variant-induced COVID-19 infections from May 2021 to October 2021 were reported. We compared the delta variant with the omicron from the latest literature review.

ABSTRACT

With the COVID-19 epidemic quickly under control in China in the early stage of 2020, global cooperation/ communications may pose great challenges to epidemic control and prevention in the country. Large-scale spread by asymptomatic carriers was a concern. We obtained data on new cluster outbreak regions with COVID-19 caused by asymptomatic carriers from June 2020 to May 2021 in China, and reported the epidemiological characteristics, the possible routes of viral transmission and infection, and different control strategies. These results show the importance of regular screening for high-risk populations and differential management strategies for epidemic control, which provide an objective basis for suppressing the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. These experiences can be used as a reference to minimize the subsequent spread of virus mutants in various places.

ABSTRACT

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has been declared as a pandemic by WHO with thousands of cases being reported each day. Numerous scientific articles are being published on the disease raising the need for a service which can organize, and query them in a reliable fashion. To support this cause we present AWS CORD-19 Search (ACS), a public, COVID-19 specific, neural search engine that is powered by several machine learning systems to support natural language based searches. ACS with capabilities such as document ranking, passage ranking, question answering, knowledge graph based ranking and biomedical topic classification provides a scalable solution to COVID-19 researchers and policy makers in their search and discovery for answers to high priority scientific questions. We present a quantitative evaluation and qualitative analysis of the system against other leading COVID-19 search platforms. ACS is top performing across these systems yielding quality results which we detail with relevant examples in this work. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

ABSTRACT

The world during the COVID-19 pandemic became more divided than united, both between states and among individuals. Opinions are polarized partly because, as I have observed in urban China, the public is simultaneously preoccupied by the very near (the self) and the very far (the imagined 'world'), but neglect the space in between, and as a result fail to recognize how the social world is concretely constituted through interconnected differences. This article advocates a way of perceiving the world by taking 'the nearby' (fujin in Chinese) as a central scope. The nearby is a lived space where one encounters people with diverse backgrounds on a regular basis. The nearby brings different positions into one view, thus constituting a 'scope' of seeing. Such a scope enables nuanced understandings of reality and facilitates new social relations and actions. The nearby could form a line of resistance against the power of the state, capital and technology, that is turning local communities into units of administrative control and value extraction. This article calls for a 'First Mile Movement', in which artists, researchers and activists work together to help facilitate citizens with the construction of their nearby as a basis for reflecting upon life experiences, testing grand ideologies and engaging in public discussion.

ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 pandemic urges us to rethink the analytical relations between China, Asia and other parts of the world. Many of what had appeared to be “Chinese characteristics” at the early stage of the outbreak turned out to be common phenomena worldwide. Apparently minor differences, such as the penetration rate of e-commerce, matter a great deal. This essay contributes to this intellectual remapping by proposing two arguments. First, the essay aims to explain the similar governmental reactions in China and other parts of the world—the initial reluctance followed by drastic lockdown—by pointing to the “gyroscope-economy” model that dominates many societies. The economy is structurally imbalanced and has thus become exceedingly dependent on the movements of people, goods and capital, much like a gyroscope, which cannot balance unless spun fast. Second, the essay examines several Chinese-specific characteristics of the gyroscope-like economy, namely the broad-based participation and the high growth rate coupled with low welfare provisions, competitiveness and precariousness. These features are attributable to a combination of hypermobility and authoritarianism. The pandemic may intertwine the two more deeply, in China and beyond. © 2020 The Author(s).
