ABSTRACT

PurposeThis paper aims to predict the post-pandemic intention of Indian consumers to participate in tourism and hospitality T&H events by incorporating the perception of Covid-19 (PCOV) into the theory of planned behavior (TPB). It also examines the relationship among attitude, subjective norm, perceived behavioral control, behavioral intention and PCOV.Design/methodology/approachThis research employed a quantitative research technique, with data collected using an online questionnaire-based survey from August 23 to October 29, 2021. The sampling approach is convenient, and the sample of this study is comprised of individuals who follow events pages on social networking sites.FindingsThe findings of SEM revealed that the proposed model has better explanatory and predictive power. The path analysis showed that all the variables of the TPB are significantly and positively associated with the post-pandemic intention to participate in the T&H events. However, the PCOV is negatively associated with the post-pandemic intention.Research limitations/implicationsThe results of this study give an idea about the post-pandemic intention of Indian consumers to participate in T&H events. The results of this study revealed important practical implications for event management organizations, travel agencies that deal in events, the T&H industry, tourism planners and other stakeholders, as these findings may be used to develop effective marketing strategies.Originality/valueThere has been a lot of research on TPB in the context of coronavirus, but to the best of the authors' knowledge, there is a gap in the literature regarding the intention to participate in T&H events. Hence, this research fills that gap.

ABSTRACT

Bringing together the resources and members of complementary materials science and engineering groups has long been a defining feature of the Materials Science & Technology (MS&T) conference series. In 2022, MS&T builds on that tradition by welcoming new partners who will bring fresh exhibits symposia, and audiences to the event. As in previous years, MS&T22 will bring together three leading materials societies--TMS, the American Ceramic Society, and the Association for Iron & Steel Technology. To supplement this long-standing partnership, MS&T will welcome Event Partners to expand the exhibition and the Society for Biomaterials to offer additional programming.

ABSTRACT

Denied citizenship and persecuted in Myanmar, the Rohingya have fled to various countries, including Malaysia. However, Malaysia is not a signatory to the 1951 Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees and its 1967 Protocol. It also has weak domestic legal and regulatory mechanisms to protect refugees and asylum-seekers. In this paper, the authors study the treatment of Rohingya refugees in Malaysia and suggest how the Malaysian legal system can better protect them by adapting international legal practices.

ABSTRACT

From its humble beginnings in 1975, the Southern Alberta Section of ITE in Canada has grown to more than 240 members in a third of a century. Although most of the membership resides in the Calgary region, the Section has members from many smaller towns and cities from Red Deer south to the US border. In general, the Section hosts monthly luncheon meetings (September to June) where technical presentations are made to the broad transportation community. The group is also actively pursuing several professional development courses and seminars to provide learning opportunities for the membership. The Section continues to partner with transportation professionals in the region through numerous technical, social, and student activities, even through the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2020, the Section hosted two regular monthly luncheon meetings in January and February. In March, due to COVID-19, the City of Calgary declared a state of emergency and the province implemented tight restrictions on gatherings. The March luncheon was therefore postponed until further notice. However, in May, the Section was one of the first to host a virtual presentation for their members.

ABSTRACT

FPA of New Jersey hosts a lot of events. Last fall, the chapter hosted its fall conference, which leaders dubbed the Post-Pandemic Party, or the PPP. As COVID-19 cases were winding down, chapter leaders thought they would celebrate with the first in-person event since the start of the pandemic. Unfortunately, shortly before the conference, the first variant was announced, and people were hesitant about coming. Lisa Crosta, CFP, CPA, president of the FPA of New Jersey chapter, said they asked members to see if they were still comfortable with attending the conference. They took a poll asking if they would attend, and if so, would they like to see vaccination requirements. And they had more people say yes than not. They were worried;if they require it, how many people are they going to lose because they didn't or they did require it? It was pretty resounding that the majority wanted the vaccine, so they required it for the first one. The conference commenced without a hitch, and many of the attendees were thankful to attend a conference in real life.

ABSTRACT

Separate panels were devoted to the discussion of cutting-edge topics and the impact they are likely to have on standards setting, financial reporting, and enforcement- today and into the future. Another session covered sustainability reporting and environmental, social, and governance (ESG) issues, once niche topics that have become relevant to increasing numbers of investors and stakeholders, as well as regulators. Board member [Kara M.] Stein has decades of experience as a securities lawyer and is a fierce advocate for investor protection. [...]board members [Duane M.] DesParte and [Christina] Ho, our CPAs on the board, in addition to being subject matter experts, also have decades of experience in the private and public sector.

ABSTRACT

Purpose>This study aims to investigate the relevance of the theory of planned behaviour (TPB) in predicting the intentional behaviour of refugee entrepreneurs. This paper uses key components of the theory on attitude, subjective norms and perceived control to explore the willingness of refugees to participate in microenterprise support programmes (MESP) in refugee camps.Design/methodology/approach>This study used a positivist research approach, comprising a quantitative basis of enquiry and gathered data via survey questionnaires. In total, 400 usable questionnaires were completed and used for analysis. This study uses descriptive and inferential analysis with SPSS and confirmatory factor analysis with AMOS to test three key TPB hypotheses.Findings>The structured model revealed acceptable high goodness-of-fit indices. Also, the findings indicated that out of three hypotheses, two hypotheses (attitude and perceived control) were substantial, positive and significant. However, the relationship between subjective norms of refugees and their intention to participate in MESP was insignificant. The findings of this study indicate the low-profile refugees give to the views and opinions of the surrounding communities when it comes to determining their intentional behaviour. As such, some poignant implications may relate to microfinance and microcredit programmes targeting refugees.Practical implications>The present study illustrates the interrelationships between the proposed variables. Also, by understanding the relationships between the selected variables, the findings would be useful for the concerned authorities to ameliorate and upgrade the well-being of refugees along with empowering their environment, which would facilitate their engagement in business and entrepreneurship.Originality/value>This study explores the relevance of TPB and its components in the context of the intentional behaviour of refugee entrepreneurs. It further illuminates the distinction of refugee behaviour towards entrepreneurship and MESP.

ABSTRACT

Clarke discusses the need to rethink the participatory design conference experience. He states that he read an article recently that suggested with the growth of online and hybrid conferences in response to Covid-19, there were more opportunities for everyone. The focus of the article was on celebrating the enabling potential of technology to make this happen. But after spending the past two years attending online conferences and now serving as general co-chair for the 2022 Participatory Design Conference (PDC), she thinks it's a mistake to focus on what technology can or cannot bring to the table in trying to make conferences more equitable.

ABSTRACT

Purpose>This paper aims to explore the best practices in marketing strategies for the Malaysian business event industry.Design/methodology/approach>A qualitative methodology was adopted to collect primary data from semi-structured interviews. The informants included ten experts from the Malaysian business event industry. The data collected were then grouped using the ATLAS.ti (v.8) software for thematic analysis. A trustworthiness assessment was applied to increase the credibility and ensure the rigour of the qualitative findings.Findings>The qualitative results revealed the following final themes: event marketing, the marketing plan, the 7 Ps of the marketing mix, strength, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT) analysis and traditional and digital marketing. Interestingly, three inductive themes were also emerged as follows: relationship marketing, unique selling points (USPs) and key opinion leaders.Research limitations/implications>This study looked at Malaysian business events and focused only on findings from the industry expert's perspective. In the future, further investigation may concentrate on other business event industry players such as destination marketing companies, airline operators, travel intermediaries, clients, suppliers, universities and the government.Practical implications>The findings offer a holistic approach to increase Malaysia's competitiveness among other primary business event host destinations in the Asian-Pacific, improve its worldwide and Asian-Pacific rankings and better position the country as a preferred business event destination during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.Originality/value>This is the first such study to date, which has never been explored in qualitative academic research. This study has substantial implications for various business event industry stakeholders in Malaysia.
