ABSTRACT

Background The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has extensively affected the public physical and mental health, especially the medical staff working in the COVID-19 wards of hospitals. Objective This study aims to evaluate the relationship between post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety sensitivity (AS), and resilience among hospital medical staff in Rasht, during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods This is an analytical cross-sectional study. The study population consists of all medical staff working in the COVID-19 wards of Poursina and Razi hospitals in Rasht, Iran. Of these, 94 participated who were selected using a convenience sampling method. Weathers et al.'s post-traumatic stress disorder checklist, Reiss et al.'s AS index, and Connor-Davidson resilience scale were used for data collection. The data were analyzed using Pearson correlation test and multiple linear regression analysis. Results There was a significant negative correlation between PTSD and resilience (r = -0.405, P = 0.001). and a significant positive correlation between PTSD and AS (r=0.633, P=0.001). The results of multiple analyses showed that resilience (B=-0.208, P=0.004) and AS (B=0.574, P=0.001) could significantly explain the PTSD in medical staff. Conclusion Resilience can be an important protective factor against PTSD in hospital medical staff during the COVID-19 pandemic. The medial staff with AS may experience the symptoms of PTSD more.

ABSTRACT

Throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, a significant amount of effort had been put into developing techniques that predict the number of infections under various assumptions about the public policy and non-pharmaceutical interventions. While both the available data and the sophistication of the AI models and available computing power exceed what was available in previous years, the overall success of prediction approaches was very limited. In this paper, we start from prediction algorithms proposed for XPrize Pandemic Response Challenge and consider several directions that might allow their improvement. Then, we investigate their performance over medium-term predictions extending over several months. We find that while augmenting the algorithms with additional information about the culture of the modeled region, incorporating traditional compartmental models and up-to-date deep learning architectures can improve the performance for short term predictions, the accuracy of medium-term predictions is still very low and a significant amount of future research is needed to make such models a reliable component of a public policy toolbox. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

ABSTRACT

This paper deals with the Bayesian estimation of the parameters of a discrete fractional epidemic model SEIRD as an extension of the classical SEIR model, describing the dynamics of disease propagation in a population. Equilibrium points are computed and the existence stability nature at these points are discussed. The basic reproduction number R0 is calculated using next generation matrix method. The estimation of the parameters is based on Bayesian inference. The numerical simulations were used to illustrate the stability of the discrete fractional order SEIRD epidemic model and to evaluate the performance of the estimation method. The model introduced is applied to real data concerning pandemic COVID-19 in Morocco. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

ABSTRACT

Previous studies extensively examined the role of accessibility to metro in shaping house prices but largely overlooked the contribution of accessibility by metro. In addition, limited studies examined the moderating effect of COVID-19 on the price effects of to-metro and by-metro accessibility. Based on multilevel hedonic price and quantile regression models, this study scrutinizes the association between to-metro accessibility, by-metro accessibility, and house prices in Chengdu, China, and examines the moderating role of COVID-19 in this association. We show that by-metro accessibility significantly influences house prices. COVID-19 significantly influences the value of to-metro accessibility but marginally affects that of by-metro accessibility. The value of to-metro accessibility is disproportionately affected by the pandemic. Specifically, small or low-priced houses are less affected than big or high-priced houses. In other words, the flattening of the to-metro price gradient is more discernible for big or high-priced houses. The changing preference of residents has also been verified by the decreases in house transaction volume in metro-adjacent areas. © 2022 Elsevier Ltd

ABSTRACT

We find that the COVID-19 pandemic increases (decreases) stock return sensitivity to market -wide (firm-specific) news, which is associated with return reversals (delayed reactions). These results are consistent with limited investor attention and investors paying heightened (reduced) attention to macro (micro) information after the outbreak. There are more biased reactions when the epidemic spread is higher, to good news than bad news, for firms headquartered in pandemic epicenters, and for larger stocks. We also find higher (lower) imbalanced trading, information flow, and price efficiency associated with market-wide (firm-specific) news during the pandemic.

ABSTRACT

This cross-sectional survey evaluated well-being and family dynamics before and during the COVID-19 pandemic in 1287 (16 + years of age, 68.3% female) Chinese participants. Structural equation modeling was used to test the association of well-being and systemic family dynamics, and related moderating factors. Results indicated some subscales of well-being and systemic family dynamics significantly worsened during the pandemic. A modified model fits well for both data before and during the pandemic in which well-being was significantly associated with systemic family dynamic and by family income. Age also positively related systemic family dynamics. The relationship between family income and well-being and the relationship between systemic family dynamics and well-being were moderated by the pandemic. The results suggest that well-being and systemic family dynamics and their associations are impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Systemic family dynamics could be a potential resource for enhancing well-being during the COVID-19 pandemic by some interventions. © The Author(s) 2023.

ABSTRACT

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is an attractive tourist destination with diverse and unique experiences, in which Vietnam is considered one of the most famous destinations in this region. Quality evaluations and strategies for attracting international tourists are being thoroughly researched. However, the COVID-19 pandemic has had the most significant impact on the tourism industry, which has suffered greatly. Therefore, the recovery and expansion of international tourism necessitate the employment of tourism-related businesses and service sector workers. Extensive research must be conducted to identify solutions and new directions to recover the international tourist market's growth as quickly as possible. This study identifies the factors that influence the destination of international visitors visiting Vietnam after the COVID-19 pandemic by modifying and evaluating the scales of the theoretical model. Using the convenience sampling technique, data were collected through interviews with 208 international visitors, with 29 observed variables. Using SPSS 22.0, five factors influencing international visitors' decisions to visit Vietnam were revealed: tourist motivation, tourist attitude, destination image, social media, and environmental quality. Finally, the authors provide policy recommendations to enhance the allure and viability of Vietnam's tourism following the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. This study's outcome is intended to establish the importance of the many variables influencing the choice of destination for international visitors. © 2022 by the authors.

ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in an alarming accumulation of plastic waste. Herein, an integrated hydropyrolysis and hydrocracking process was performed to upcycle disposable masks into fuel-range iso-alkanes over carbon supported ruthenium (Ru/C). Experimental results indicated that catalyst type significantly affected product distribution during the hydropyrolysis and vapor-phase hydrocracking of disposable masks. Compared with zeolites-induced catalytic cascade process where up to ∼25.9 wt% yield of aromatic hydrocarbons such as toluene and xylenes were generated, a ∼82.7 wt% yield of desirable iso-alkanes with a high C5–C12 gasoline selectivity of 95.5% was obtained over Ru/C under 550 °C hydropyrolysis temperature and 300 °C hydrocracking temperature at 0.2 MPa H2. The cascade hydropyrolysis and hydrocracking process also exhibited high adaptability and flexibility in upcycling single-use syringes, food packaging, and plastic bags, generating 79.1, 81.6, and 80.3 wt% yields of fuel range iso/n-alkanes, respectively. This catalytic cascade hydrotreating process provides an efficient and effective approach to convert pandemic-derived plastic waste into gasoline-range fuel products. © 2022 Elsevier Ltd

ABSTRACT

A preliminary evaluation of a multicomponent youth development program for siblings in foster care was conducted prior to and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Pretest posttest measures of youth well-being were collected from sixteen youth, caregivers, and caseworkers over a six-month period. Caregivers reported increased internalizing and externalizing behaviors, sibling relationship difficulties, prosocial behavior, and resilience during the study period. Youth reported reduced school engagement, increased resilience, and prosocial behavior. In-person sibling programming was associated with increased prosocial behavior. Virtual sibling programming was associated with lower hyperactivity, increased prosocial behavior, and increased emotional problems. Implications for research and practice are discussed.

ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 pandemic could be considered as a career shock for employees in different industries around the world. The aim of this research was to gain insight into the dynamics of Serbian small business owners' career shocks caused by the COVID-19 pandemic by using personal construct psychology (PCP) as a theoretical framework. We conducted 18 semi-structured interviews with 9 small business owners on two separate occasions and analyzed their personal stories. The data were collected during the most restrictive lockdown in Serbia in April 2020 and again at the end of June 2020 when the number of the people infected was on a rapid rise. The reaction to the career shock caused by the pandemic can be understood by analyzing transitions (how people perceive career shocks), people's coping strategies and the way in which their dependencies were dispersed. This study contributes to understanding the career shock issue by viewing it through the lens of the personal construct theory. © 2021 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.

ABSTRACT

For a long time, the tourism industry was considered one of the economy's lead-ing and most progressive sectors, characterized by an advanced scale of development. The situation was changed fundamentally by the COVID-19 pandemic, which caused signifi-cant losses at the global level, not only for tourism but also for all sectors of the economy and society. In this regard, the provision of this article identifies the nature of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on tourism in a particular country in the European region using cluster analysis. In the first stage of this work, a detailed literature review on the existence of such a connection was carried out with the help of bibliometric analysis. The authors used the results published in Scopus and Web of Science databases for the keywords 'tourism >>, and 'Covid-19 >> and analyzed the growth dynamics in their number and citations, belonging to the research area and the spread of geography. Building a bibliometric map of keywords based on their joint placement in the VOSviewer software complex deepened findings. It made it possible to form 10 clusters, each of which covers scientific works on various forms of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on tourism (for example, behavioral, marketing, economic, environmental, psychological aspects, etc.). In the second stage, an analytical review was conducted, which showed a significant drop in the absolute and apparent contribution of travel and tourism to GDP worldwide in 2020 and 2021 worsened with the pandemic level, and an increase in the dynamics of key indicators of the tourism industry in the world and across all UNWTO regions (especially Asia & Pacific). In the last step, a hierarchical agglomerative cluster analysis (with Ward's method) was carried out for the countries of the European region (45 countries) based on indicators of the number of COVID-19 cases in the country (cumulative and new), vaccination of the population, the presence of restrictions on tourism, international tourist arrivals, and receipts, collection of tourism in exports. All indicators for analyzing the collected state are provided as of July 30, 2022, using the Stata SE 12 software complex. The construction of a dendrogram and the use of Calins-ki-Harabasz and Duda-Hart stopping rules made it possible to decide on the presence of 3 clusters that meet the conditions of this study and are characterized by different levels of adaptability to post-pandemic functioning and recovery direction.

ABSTRACT

Background The COVID 19-pandemic has led physicians to change their approach to treating non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) to reduce hospital stays for patients. Objectives We aimed to assess the toxicity and efficacy of extended interval (EI) dosing of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) compared to standard dosing (SD). Methods In this retrospective two-center study, we included patients with stage III/IV NSCLC who were treated with ICIs with or without maintenance pemetrexed during the month before March 2020. Adverse events and efficacy were collected until June 2021. Toxicity and survival were assessed using multivariate Cox models. Results Among the 134 patients identified (8 stage III and 126 stage IV;66 first line and 60 second or subsequent lines), 70.9% received EI dosing. In the EI group, 12.6% of patients developed grade 3 or 4 immune-related adverse events versus 15.4% in the SD group (P- value = 0.8). Treatment was definitively discontinued due to toxicity in 9 patients in the EI group and in 5 in the SD group (P-value =0.5). Overall survival was not associated with dosage regimen or toxicity analyzed as a time-dependent variable. Conclusions Our study suggests that EI dosing of ICIs did not affect toxicity and overall survival in lung cancer patients.
