ABSTRACT

China and the U.S. have the biggest markets in the world. They both established diplomatic links in 1979 and the bilateral trade was developed swiftly just after China joined the United Nations Organization (UNO) in 1971. America is the Chinese top one export market and the most significant source of foreign investment. However, the main worldwide economic event in 2018 was the Sino-U.S. trade war. In March 2018, the U.S. threatened to levy high duties on Chinese imports. The equivocal shift of import and export of the Sino-US trade relations were distinctively caught in China's trade surplus with the United States, which brought divergence to the trade relations. Consequently, the Sino-U.S. trade imbalance was the main reason behind why Trump incited the trade war. This paper actually analytically discusses the phenomenon of Sino-U.S. trade war as it is considered as a test case for the new American President Joe Biden.

ABSTRACT

This intervention reflects on the twin pandemics of COVID-19 and anti-Black racism in conversation with feminist pedagogies and controversy. To do so, I weave together ideas from the papers in this themed section on Controversy and Anti-Oppression Pedagogies as well as scholarship on feminist pedagogies and practices to argue for revolutionary feminist disruption. I highlight a pedagogy of discomfort and discomfort as a framework for Black feminist and anti-oppression pedagogical engagements and spaces. I argue that doing so yields liberatory possibilities for our classrooms.

ABSTRACT

Alternate :In Brazil, municipal elections play the role of mid-term disputes, as they allow for anticipating the electoratés tendencies for the following national elections. HOwwever, the specificity of the dynamics of local campaigns is the appointment of a type of relationship and political behavior typical of municipal disputes. The proximity between candidates and voters is a delimiter of behavior in local disputes. Online social networks are in all dimensions of political and electoral relations. The objective of the article is to analyze the use of Twitter by candidates for mayor in 2020? It seeks to identify possible lexical patterns by ideological position, type of candidate - incumbent or challenger - and region. It is also intended to verify the presence of the covid-19 theme in the candidatés tweets. For that, the Automated Lexical Content Analysis technique will be used. The results show that, among classified tweets, about 60%. However, among the elected candidates, most of the texts classified as public policy were concentrated.

ABSTRACT

Unhappy with the rulings of the WTO dispute settlement system, which disproportionately targeted US use of trade remedies, the United States ended the entire system in 2019. There are multiple hurdles to agreeing to new terms of trade remedy use and thus potentially restoring some form of binding dispute settlement. First, a change would affect access to policy flexibility by the now large number of users of trade remedies. Second, although China's exports are the overwhelming target of trade remedies, exporters in other countries increasingly find themselves caught up in trade remedy actions linked to China. Third, critical differences posed by China's economic model may call for new rules for trade remedies, but no consensus on those rules has emerged. Even some of the most promising reforms have practical limitations, create additional challenges, or may be politically unviable.

ABSTRACT

The main purpose of this study is to explore the commodity characteristics of crude oil market and gold market, and use CBP-GARCH model to capture whether there is instantaneous co-jump variation between the two markets when unexpected information occurs. The empirical results show that there is a phenomenon of volatility clustering between commodity markets. When the interest rate spread of stock market and long-term and short-term bonds expands, it has a significant impact on gold, but not in crude oil commodities, showing that there are different linkage between commodity market and financial market. In addition, when there is a transmission of market information, the jump intensity of crude oil will be higher than that of gold market, and there are instantaneous co-jump variation characteristics. This phenomenon can be attributed to the fact that the crude oil market is affected by market supply and demand, and the gold market plays a mixed characteristic of hedging and investment. Therefore, the empirical results of this study also suggest that investors should consider the asymmetric jump fluctuation variation between commodity markets when the market unexpected information is generated, so as to effectively control the risk degree in the portfolio.

ABSTRACT

Alternate :Web 2.0 tools, and specifically social media, are widely used in communication amongst the stakeholders of primary schools, including teachers, administrators, parents, and students, with the aims of communication, distance education, and supporting face-to-face education. Before the Covid 19 pandemic, web 2.0 tools, which were used by the preference depending on the digital literacy skills of teachers, have been used compulsorily during the period when face-to-face education was suspended, and distance education was carried out in line with epidemic measures. Thus, it is expected that conflicts and disputes among the members of the schools in face-to-face relations might be seen in the virtual area. This research basically aims to examine the effect of social networks, which are increasingly used, on organizational conflict management. The study is designed as a cross-sectional survey, and the data gathered through a survey developed by the researchers. According to the results of the study, the participant teachers widely use social network tools in communication and education processes;they experience conflicts and disputes by using social networks and support the idea of developing ethical codes and principles to tackle with these disputes.

ABSTRACT

The Pan American Health Organization and Amnesty International have called on governments to do more to protect health care workers, for example, by distributing simple, accessible information to combat the spread of misinformation. The authors found that the injury rate was higher in rural and remote areas than in urban areas and that a decline in firearm-related injuries occurred over the study period. Out-of-hospital disputes were also an important cause of serious hospital violence (11%). [...]interviewed health care workers expressed an urgent need for legislation, increased security, and training to handle disputes to prevent the violent incidents against health care workers and protect their safety.

ABSTRACT

There is no uniform theoretical standpoint on the effects of changing interest rates and the role of money among economists. Though these disputes exercise a great influence on the economic policy measures adopted as well. For the management of the 2008 global financial crisis many central banks entered into forceful interest rate cuts to contribute to the revitalisation of the economy. The economic recession caused by the pandemic of 2020 again raises the issue how central banks can stimulate growth. In this study we deal with the liquidity trap issue attributed to Keynes. Keynes pointed out that there might exist a lower interest rate limit under which money demand becomes infinite. His conceptions put the foundations to the question, at what interest rate levels might the liquidity trap – a term coined later by Robertson – phenomenon become effective. He was followed by numerous renowned economists dealing with the conception. In this paper we are discussing the most important theoretical approaches – among others the views of Hansen, Hicks, Tobin, Patinkin, Krugman, Brunner and Meltzer and Eggertson. We provide an overview on the effects of low interest rate levels adopted by Japan, by the central banks of Japan, the USA and the ECB aimed at stimulating the economy. Based on the study it can be confirmed that central banks can contribute to economic growth keeping interest rates low and therewith fostering investment. Nevertheless, beyond keeping short-term interest rates low, it might be adequate to control interest rates of other maturities and, especially under deflationary expectations, central banks should express their prolonged commitment to low interest rates.

ABSTRACT

The logistics sector in France is emblematic of contemporary labor processes in the service sector, where working conditions are at the root of a long-term, but silent, health crisis. Although the unionization of French logistics workers has gained some strength since the early 2000s, struggles over wages and working conditions remained segmented and local, and were unable to contain the progressive casualization of the employment or to counter the intensification of work. This article is a reflection on the fragmented and low-intensity conflictuality of the French logistics sector. Drawing on three ethnographic studies and on quantitative data, we analyze labor conflicts in various segments of the warehouse industry during the last decade in France, and identify some of the limits of French trade union strategies toward organizing logistics workers. We show that the massive use of temporary work and the weakness of the efforts made by traditional trade unions federations prevent the emergence of a larger labor movement in the sector. We argue that the fragmentation and the very high turnover that characterizes the French warehouse industry should encourage trade unions to invest more resources, often local and rooted in logistics zones, from outside the workplace.

ABSTRACT

The growing competition between Beijing and Washington and the coronavirus pandemic are not only changing the regional landscape but also China-ROK-Japan cooperation in arctic affairs. For the three countries, changes in the Northeast Asian landscape present both opportunities and challenges for trilateral exchange and cooperation. China, South Korea, and Japan all depend on international trade, shipping, and energy for their sustained economic growth. As extra-regional actors with major interests in arctic affairs, China-ROK-Japan share similar policy positions as observers on the Arctic Council. At the same time, the three economic powers also have inescapable competing views and conflicts of interest in the arctic region. Amid a shifting global landscape and the coronavirus pandemic, Northeast Asia is also undergoing profound changes, which requires higher levels of trilateral cooperation in arctic affairs to provide further momentum for maintaining regional stability and harmony. The best policy for China, South Korea, and Japan, three interdependent major economies in a world of growing uncertainty and competition is more coordination and cooperation. The Arctic could be a region where higher levels of Northeast Asian cooperation and integration can set a new paradigm of sub-regional coordination in the service of regional stability and prosperity.

ABSTRACT

The crisis caused by COVID-19 pandemic lead to shocks in the global supply chains in 2020 and 2021. During the past two years - the trade wars, the effects on supply and demand and the ensuing logistical chaos that result from the rapid return to trade - have exposed vulnerabilities in firms' production strategies and supply chains. The paper is based on data from empirical research, expanding on the vulnerabilities of supply chain operations during global disruptions, focusing on both internal and external aspects of the companies. The research led to the discovery of future challenges which modern supply chains have to adapt to, through the possible digitalization of the supply chains with its analyzed benefits and drawbacks. Digitalization can synchronize various elements by eliminating manual processes and spreadsheets and replacing them with digital systems in companies that unite stakeholders around the world, improving communication, collaboration and ensuring the free flow of information in real time and by including each member in the supply chains. Based on data from the research, the paper presents detailed responses on various disruptions in supply chains. Organizations that are advanced in supply chain planning show key behaviors that drive their superior performance, enabling them to position themselves successfully and to adapt to most kinds of disruptions and momentary uncertainty.

ABSTRACT

In this article, we use the COVID-19 pandemic to study governance through digital technologies. We investigate ‘digital contact tracing’ (DCT) apps developed in Austria and Norway and find their emergence, contestation and stabilisation as moments in which norms and values are puzzled through, and distributions of power change. We show that debates on DCT apps involved disputes on ‘digital citizenship’, that is, on the scope and nature of data that authorities are allowed to collect from citizens. Remarkably, these disputes were settled through the enrolment of a framework developed jointly by Apple and Google. Software became akin to a constitution that enshrined understandings of good citizenship into technological design, while also being a means through which geographies of power materialised. This article contributes to literature on technological governance by showing how the rising salience of technologies in governance transform political geographies and, as a consequence, democratic lives.

ABSTRACT

The paper examines the contributions of African indigenous knowledge in the settling of disputes and advancing of justice, especially in the health sector during the Covid-19. It argues that for a long time, the western thought system has been placed over the African indigenous knowledge system in the administration of justice in many sectors in South Africa. The paper equally contends that the AIKs is still very relevant and useful in the delivering of justice in the 21st century. Debate and intellectual discussion on the issue of 'innocent until proven guilty' has favored the western thought system than the AlKs. The study sees this as a gap and attempts to bridge this gap by bringing to the fore the good qualities and potentials of the African indigenous knowledge system in the enforcement of justice in South Africa. It argues that if AIKs is given a free and fair hearing and trial, then it can adequately uphold the doctrine of the innocent until proven guilty. The paper utilizes the secondary method, sourced through document reviews and its results showed that the African indigenous knowledge system has been instrumental and effective in the fight against diseases such as the HIV/AIDs in South Africa. It concludes that the higher the utilization of the AIKs, the stronger, better, and sustainable the healthcare and socioeconomic system of South Africa.

ABSTRACT

This article introduces a special issue on the politics of sovereignty in German history. Historical work provides an important corrective to understand the current discursive resurgence of sovereignty. Historians (and other scholars) should treat sovereignty not as a factual description of the world, but rather analyze it as a rhetorical claim to assert power in territorial, political, economic, legal, and cultural disputes. Much of the power of sovereignty lies in the power to define its boundaries, whether geographical or conceptual. German history offers a particularly fruitful route to historicize the concept, as Germany is arguably both a paradigmatic and a special case in the history of sovereignty. From late-nineteenth-century colonialism to contemporary disputes around gambling restrictions, German discourse on sovereignty has intertwined with and challenged international understandings of sovereignty together with neighboring concepts, such as independence, autonomy, supreme authority, and control. In the twentieth century, perhaps no country experienced stronger affirmations of both sovereignty and the necessity to integrate into inter- and supranational structures than the country at the center of the two world wars and subsequently divided during the Cold War.

ABSTRACT

This article delivers a novel economic analysis of US dependence on China for rare-earth elements and sheds lights on how Western nations may exploit "limit pricing" to break China's global monopoly in rare-earth element production and refinement. This analytical framework, supported by a comprehensive literature review, the application of microeconomic and industrial organization concepts, and two case-study scenarios, provides several policy recommendations to address an important foreign policy challenge for the United States.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: The main purpose of this article is to present the views of employee mediators on the importance of the intra-organizational culture of communication in a crisis situation in an organization and employers' use of employee mediation as a way to improve internal communication in the organization and to overcome the crisis within the organization. The main goal of the work is to investigate whether the high communication culture in the organization has a direct impact on the number of labor disputes, and in the case of commencement of employee mediation, at the end of mediation with a settlement/agreement. Design/Methodology/Approach: The article uses qualitative and quantitative research. The research tool was supervised telephone surveys, containing questions and statements about the opinion on the impact of the culture of internal communication in the organization on the occurrence of labor disputes and the course of employee mediation. The survey was preceded by a series of in-depth, unstructured expert interviews with employee mediators. Findings: The higher the culture of internal communication of the organization, the fewer crisis situations in the organization caused by labor disputes, and the greater the chance of reaching a settlement in the event of initiating employee mediation. Practical Implications: The results can be used to build a high culture of internal communication within an organization. The achieved results may turn out to be particularly useful for organizations in crisis situations (such as, for example, labor disputes) and those that want to prevent the emergence of crises in the future. Originality / Value: This study is an initial effort in exploring the intra-organizational culture of communication in the context of employee mediation.

ABSTRACT

[...]a few years ago, NTS looked to be a rather mundane field of study, particularly in East Asia and Southeast Asia, where traditional security perspectives have overly dominated academic debates as a result of long-standing territorial disputes and a strict attachment to Westphalian norms of noninterference and respect for national sovereignty. Security governance processes are examined in detail in a number of NTS crises that have confronted the region, namely health (chap. 3), environmental security (chap. 4), migration (chap. 5), humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations (chap. 6), nuclear energy (chap. 7) and food security (chap. 8). [...]the book seems primarily to focus on less contentious NTS arenas while it would have been interesting to see whether security governance processes are also surfacing in areas such as terrorism and maritime security, which generally speaking are more sensitive to individual sovereignty.
