ABSTRACT
A prerequisite for effective vaccination is the formation of proper collective immunity in society. The attitudes of healthcare professionals towards vaccination directly impact the population's adherence to this method. Objective. To study the attitude of healthcare professionals toward COVID-19 vaccination. Material and methods. The sociological survey method with the author's questionnaire based on GoogleForm was used. In the sur-vey, 450 physicians aged 25 to 70 participated voluntarily. It was a cross-sectional study carried out in the autumn of 2021. Results. Of those surveyed, the majority (86.8%) of physicians and almost all (96.1%) nurses were vaccinated against COVID-19. When studying the motivation for vaccine prophylaxis, a direct average strength of a statistically significant correlation between the adherence to COVID-19 vaccination and the emergence of a sense of safety was established (rxy =0.346;p<0.05). The most common reasons for the refusal of doctors from vaccination were the fear of complications, beliefs about low protection against infection and the subsequent decrease in immunity. According to healthcare professionals, the most effective means of prevention, in descending order, were a healthy lifestyle, the absence of fear of becoming ill, vaccination, drugs that stimulate immunity, the use of barrier measures, and other means. Conclusion. The ambiguous attitude of healthcare professionals towards vaccination against COVID-19 does exist and deserves the closest attention. Considering the issue's complexity, further research on the attitude of healthcare professionals toward vaccination is required.Copyright © 2023, Media Sphera Publishing Group. All rights reserved.
ABSTRACT
The current study aimed to identify the impact of positive thinking on the anxiety of Coronavirus infection through the lockdown among UNRWA staff in Jordan. To achieve the objectives of the study, three measures were developed, the Positive Thinking Scale, the anxiety level of Coronavirus Infection Scale, and the lockdown Scale. A sample of (2036) employees responded to the measures. The results showed that the level of anxiety for COVID -19 infection among the sample was high, and statistically significant differences were found in the level of Covid-19 infection anxiety according to the sex variable for females, also statistically differences were found in the level of anxiety in COVID-19 infection according to age in favor of (31-40), and statistically differences for the social status in favor of married couples. Results also showed a direct negative impact of positive thinking variable on the level of anxiety associated with COVID-19 infection, and an effect of positive thinking on the level of anxiety during activating the lockdown. The study recommends designing training programs for employees to help them adapt to different circumstances and enable them to continue performing their assigned work. ABSTRACT
Frequency of bacterial co-infections among patients with COVID-19 is not high, and over-prescribing of antibiotics may contribute the selection of resistant strains of enterobacteria and gram-negative non-fermenting bacteria. The aim of the study was to assess the local features of antibiotic resistance of K. pneumoniae and its genetic mechanisms against background of the COVID-19 infection pandemic. Material and methods. There was selected 37 carbapenem-resistant K. pneumoniae strains isolated in 2016, 2017 and 2020 from hospitalized patients, including 15 strains, isolated from patients with COVID-19 infection. Minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of meropenem and colistin were determined by broth microdilution method. Determination of MICs of eravacycline, ceftazidime/avibactam, meropenem/vaborbactam, imipenem/relebactam was performed using Sensititre diagnostic system on EUMDROXF plates. Susceptibility to 11 combinations of 2 antibiotics was detected by modified method of multiply combination bactericidal testing. For 4 K. pneumoniae strains high-throughput sequencing was performed, followed with the subsequent search for determinants of antibiotic resistance and virulence, assessment of plasmid profiles. Results. All strains were resistant to meropenem (MIC50 32 mg/l, MIC90 128 mg/l) and produced KPC and OXA-48 carbapenemases. Strains isolated in 2016-2017 were susceptible to colistin (MIC <=2 mg/l), in 2020 only 26.7% of the strains retained their susceptibility (MIC50 64 mg/l, MIC90 256 mg/l). Susceptibility to combinations of two antibiotics with colistin included reduced from 84.6-100% in 2016-2017 till 26.6-66.7% in 2020. The strains isolated in 2020 retained their susceptibility to ceftazidime/avibactam (MIC <=1 mg/l). 5 strains resistant to cefiderocol with a MIC 8 mg/l were identified. Strains 2564 and 3125 isolated in 2020 from sputum of patients with COVID-19 infection belonged to different sequence-types (ST12 and ST23) and contained the blaOXA-48 carbapenemase gene, additionally strain 2564 contained the blaKPC-27carbapenemase gene. Resistance to colistin was caused by inactivation of the mgrB genes due to insertion of IS1 and IS5-like transposons. Conclusion. The performed genetic studies demonstrate a diversity of mechanisms of antibiotic resistance in K. pneumoniae leading to the formation of resistance including to antibiotics that haven't been used in Belarus till now.Copyright © 2021 Geotar Media Publishing Group. ABSTRACT
The deadly virus COVID-19 has heavily impacted all countries and brought a dramatic loss of human life. It is an unprecedented scenario and poses an extreme challenge to the healthcare sector. The disruption to society and the economy is devastating, causing millions of people to live in poverty. Most citizens live in exceptional hardship and are exposed to the contagious virus while being vulnerable due to the inaccessibility of quality healthcare services. This study introduces ubiquitous computing as a state-of-The-Art method to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 and spare more ICU beds for those truly needed. Ubiquitous computing offers a great solution with the concept of being accessible anywhere and anytime. As COVID-19 is highly complicated and unpredictable, people infected with COVID-19 may be unaware and still live on with their life. This resulted in the spread of COVID-19 being uncontrollable. Therefore, it is essential to identify the COVID-19 infection early, not only because of the mitigation of spread but also for optimal treatment. This way, the concept of wearable sensors to collect health information and use it as an input to feed into machine learning to determine COVID-19 infection or COVID-19 status monitoring is introduced in this study. © 2023 IEEE.
ABSTRACT
As of May 2022, a total of over 528 million cases of coronavirus 19 disease (COVID-19) worldwide with over 6 million deaths. Remdesivir is a broad-spectrum antiviral medication approved worldwide;it acts by inhibiting the RNA-dependent RNA polymerase, used for moderate-to-severe COVID-19 which requires supplemental oxygen but not intubation. Not shown to improve mortality but shorten the recovery time, especially if given within the first 10 days of symptom initiation. Despite its worldwide use, its cardiovascular safety profile has not been determined as yet. Herein, we report two cases of COVID-19 infection who develop symptomatic bradycardia on a 5-day course of remdesivir.Copyright © 2022 Annals of Clinical Cardiology Published by Wolters Kluwer - Medknow.
ABSTRACT
The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has caused millions of deaths worldwide along with detrimental socioeconomic consequences. Existing evidence suggests that the rate of indoor transmission is directly linked with the Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) conditions. Most of the existing methodologies for virus transmissibility risk estimation are based on the well-known Wells-Riley equation and assume well-mixed, uniform conditions;so spatiotemporal variations within the indoor space are not captured. In this work, a novel fine-grained methodology for real-time virus transmission risk estimation is developed using a 3D model of a real office room with 31 occupants. CONTAM-CFD0 software is used to compute the airflow vectors and the resulting 3D CO2 concentration map (attributed to the exhalations from the occupants). Simulation results are also provided that demonstrate the efficacy of using CO2 sensors for estimating the infection risk in real-time in the 3D office environment. © 2022 17th International Conference on Indoor Air Quality and Climate, INDOOR AIR 2022. ABSTRACT
Due to the complex epidemiological situation resulting from the infection of COVID-19, doctors of various spe-cialties have a number of questions regarding the tactics of patients' management. Current data indicate that SARS-CoV-2 has the ability to affect all organs and systems of the body, including the gastrointestinal tract. Liver is one of the target organs, affected by COVID-19 infection. The authors consider the latest foreign and domestic recommendations for the treatment of patients with hepatic lesions. A clinical case of hepatic dysfunction and possibilities of its correction after COVID-19 have been outlined. The main pathogenetic mechanisms of changes in liver samples are highlighted, including immune activation and inflammation caused by cytokines with the initiation of cytokine storm, coagulopathy and multiple organ failure, cytotoxicity due to virus replication in cholangiocytes and hepatocytes with the participation of angiotensin-converting enzyme-2 and serine prote-ase-2 receptors, severe hypoxia caused by vascular endothelium damage, drug-induced liver damage caused by hepatotoxicity and immune-mediated damage, reactivation of previously existing liver diseases (hepatitis, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, as well as progression and decompensation of liver cirrhosis). The domestic algo-rithm for the management of patients with liver diseases, hospitalized with confirmed COVID-19 infection, involves the control of liver samples once every 2 — 3 months, annual control of fibrosis degree, correction of diet and lifestyle, minimization of drug therapy, administration of drugs (hepatoprotectors) and correction of micro-circulation processes and functions of other organs/systems. The presented clinical case demonstrates the importance of timely treatment of liver functional disorders and the need for dynamic monitoring of the condition of patients who have contracted COVID-19. © 2022, Publishing Company VIT-A-POL.
