ABSTRACT

In the wake of the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19), social distancing is instrumental for containing the pandemic. To maximize its effectiveness, it is paramount to investigate psychological factors that predict adherence to social distancing guidelines and examine corresponding interventions. We focused on individual differences in if-then planning, self-control, and boredom, and tested an intervention based on if-then planning. We conducted a two-wave longitudinal study combining observational and experimental methods. Participants (N = 574, 35.7% female, age: M = 37.5 years, SD = 10.8) reported their adherence to social distancing guidelines and the perceived difficulty of adherence at T1, along with trait measures of if-then planning, self-control, and boredom. Afterwards, they were randomly assigned to an if-then planning intervention to increase adherence, or to a control intervention. One week later at T2, participants again reported their adherence and the perceived difficulty of adhering. Multiple regression and structural equation modeling were used to establish whether trait if-then planning, self-control, and boredom predicted adherence, and to examine the effects of the if-then planning intervention. Trait if-then planning, self-control, and boredom were associated with T1 adherence, while only if-then planning and boredom predicted T2 adherence. No overall treatment effect of the if-then planning intervention emerged; however, participants who complied with the intervention (75.6%) maintained higher levels of adherence over time than control participants. In sum, individual differences in if-then planning, self-control, and boredom predicted adherence to social distancing guidelines. If-then planning interventions are promising but require further steps to ascertain compliance.

ABSTRACT

Recent decades have seen the emergence of hybrid models of living and working associated typologies. These developments have been analysed from the perspective of different disciplines, each with their own interpre-tation of this phenomenon. Planning and architecture have addressed hybridization as a specific form of inter-action between spatio-functional features (such as mixed use, multi-functionality and flexibility) and social features (such as formal and informal interactions and the spontaneous appropriation of spaces) or have sometimes simply focused on the spatio-functional dimension in urban spaces. Studies from other disciplines (e. g. mobility networks, transportation, sociology and information technology) have shown that hybrid spaces cannot exist without access to digitalization technologies. Such technologies are accelerating hybridization processes. This study examines the complex and layered phenomenon of hybridization as a possible combination of (or interaction between) spatio-functional, social and digital features within the planning debate and related fields. Most of the case studies explored by scholars so far have focused on interactions occurring between residential, social and recreational functions, but working functions are playing an increasingly important role. Furthermore, the COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the development of new forms of hybridity in cities. As a consequence, the rising use of hybrid (on-site and on-line) working practices, planners, policy makers and stakeholders, as well as scholars, have increasingly discussed the concept of hybridization. In this context, various hybrid typologies of urban spaces have materialized in forms such as new working spaces (NWS) which include co-working spaces, incubators, as well as some cafe ' s and multi-functional public libraries, which have recently provided working spaces. This paper focuses on the evolving concept of hybridity from the planning perspective. Based on five hybrid NWS including their surrounding neighbourhoods in Oslo, it provides empirical evidence for an understanding of the phenomenon that may support the development of hybrid spaces and buildings and develops suggestions for planning strategies.

ABSTRACT

Gaining an understanding of speed–crash relationships is a critical issue in highway safety research. Because of the ongoing pandemic (COVID-19) there has been a reduction in traffic volume, and some early studies explain that speeding in an environment with less traffic is associated with a high number of crashes, especially fatal and serious injury crashes. This study aims to quantify the impact of operating speed on traffic crash occurrences. The study conflated several databases (speed data, roadway inventory data, and crash data) that contain data from Dallas, Texas, spanning from 2018 to 2020, to examine the speed–crash association. Using the negative binomial Lindley regression model, this study showed that the trends of crash prediction models vary over the years (2018, 2019, and 2020) by different injury severity levels (i.e., fatal crashes, fatal and incapacitating injury crashes). The 2020 models show that operating speed measures (i.e., average operating speed) have a significant impact on crash frequencies. The magnitudes of the speed measures show variations across the models at different injury severity levels.

ABSTRACT

During Covid-19 pandemic many people and institutions preferred online coaching instead of in person education. The problem with online is that it will be difficult to carry on interconnections between students and professors in that environment. The main constraint for conducting online session is that the people in remote areas may find a difficulty to connect to online sessions having network issues. Electronic mentoring (e-mentoring) is implemented like a website in which the mentor and mentee can communicate with each other. With the help of this mentoring the project can provide a best solution for both the mentor and mentee. They can communicate with each other with the help of online platform and even with the help of emails.This proposed method will help them to keep the track of their academic progress and achievements of students. This article mainly focus on the mentoring through physical and virtual environment in which the mentee will be interacting with the mentor to know the progress of their academics. This article discusses about the website which is developed to fulfill the needs of the student and it discusses about the various stages of development that helped in building the website. Students can share their difficulties and their achievements with the mentor who are assigned for them particularly. In future planning to implement artificial intelligence technique to online mentoring process, this is for the betterment of student's growth. © 2023 IEEE.

ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly and negatively influenced human organizations and activities at global scales. The impacts are evident in not only the cancelation of events, but also in the postponement of events for a year or more. Countries, cities, economies and voluntary organizations have been affected by these events and activities at local, regional and international scales. One major international non-governmental organization with multiple global networks is Sister Cities International (SCI) which links businesses, schools, and community groups. Groups interested in recreation/tourism, sports, art, culture, health care, human empowerment and more are among the networks evident at all scales. This study looks specifically at the linkages of five sister cities with strong Thoroughbred racing and raising economies and how COVID-19 affected the events planned for 2020 and 2021. The specific focus is on Lexington, Kentucky, the center of the Thoroughbred industry in the U.S. Details reveal that while a few events and activities were canceled, many more were rescheduled for 2021, including the Sister Cities International conference which was held virtually in July 2021. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2022.

ABSTRACT

Globalization, technological innovations, and the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic have promoted disruptive changes in buying and selling negotiation models through e-communication. As a result, Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) have been forced to adapt to online channels. Considering market relevance, this article describes the survey results with 11 SMEs regarding their adherence to digital media. Moreover, a case study of a selected company demonstrated barriers and propulsions to digital adequacy. The aim was to promote SMEs' competitiveness through technology transfer, focusing on e-communication and strategic digital planning. The results show that the insertion of technology through digital media depends on the knowledge of the tools used in this medium. Therefore, despite being ready to use, SMEs have not yet fully leveraged digital media. Organizational barriers, such as lack of time for those responsible, lack of training and knowledge, and strategic planning, were observed. However, environmental factors such as competitive pressure and innovation-related policies are positive for insertion. Thus, there is room for companies to invest in digital strategic planning focused on improving sales, customer relations, and competitiveness. © 2022 IEEE.

ABSTRACT

Relevance: The global consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic emphasize today the importance of the concept of "One Health" for the health system, which provides for the use of a coordinated, joint, interdisciplinary and intersectoral approach to eliminate potential or existing risks arising at the interface of the "environment-animal-human-ecosystem". The aim of the work is to study the experience of countries in implementing the concept of "One Health". Search strategy: comparative analysis of publications on the research topic, sources indexed in the databases of the electronic library e-Library, Google Academy, Pubmed, Web of Science, Scopus. 26 countries from the European Union, South America and Africa were subject to analysis. The criteria defined are: institutional framework;mechanisms of intersectoral interaction and programs/tools for the implementation of the concept of "One Health". Results: The literature review provides a comparative analysis of the experience of implementing the concept of "One Health" in 26 countries. Realizing the importance of "One Health" in the general concept of public safety, countries have launched an active policy to promote it in the last decade. Characteristic features of country policies are the intersectoral approach with appropriate support from the government of the country, the activity of all participants in promoting the initiative and their investment.

PurposeMost epidemic transmission forecasting methods can only provide deterministic outputs. This study aims to show that probabilistic forecasting, in contrast, is suitable for stochastic demand modeling and emergency medical resource planning under uncertainty.Design/methodology/approachTwo probabilistic forecasting methods, i.e. quantile regression convolutional neural network and kernel density estimation, are combined to provide the conditional quantiles and conditional densities of infected populations. The value of probabilistic forecasting in improving decision performances and controlling decision risks is investigated by an empirical study on the emergency medical resource planning for the COVID-19 pandemic.FindingsThe managerial implications obtained from the empirical results include (1) the optimization models using the conditional quantile or the point forecasting result obtain better results than those using the conditional density;(2) for sufficient resources, decision-makers' risk preferences can be incorporated to make tradeoffs between the possible surpluses and shortages of resources in the emergency medical resource planning at different quantile levels;and (3) for scarce resources, the differences in emergency medical resource planning at different quantile levels greatly decrease or disappear because of the existing of forecasting errors and supply quantity constraints.Originality/valueVery few studies concern probabilistic epidemic transmission forecasting methods, and this is the first attempt to incorporate deep learning methods into a two-phase framework for data-driven emergency medical resource planning under uncertainty. Moreover, the findings from the empirical results are valuable to select a suitable forecasting method and design an efficient emergency medical resource plan.

ABSTRACT

During an emergency, timely and effective distribution of emergency supplies is critical in rescue. In the context of Covid-19, given the difficulties in distributing supplies to communities due to super infectious viruses, unmanned vehicle distribution is studied by taking into account the priority and satisfaction of communities to improve distribution safety and effectiveness of supplies. Furthermore, the influence of distribution time on the overall efficiency is also taken into account, thus ultimately establishing an unmanned distribution model with the shortest distribution time while meeting community satisfaction. The improved whale algorithm is used to solve the dual-objective model and compared with the basic whale optimization algorithm. The results show that the improved whale algorithm demonstrates better convergence, searchability, and stability. The constructed model can scientifically distribute daily necessities to communities while considering their priority and satisfaction. © 2022 IEEE.

ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on metro commuting ridership. However, the exact magnitude and spatial and temporal characteristics of the impact remain unclear. In this study, we explored the impact of the COVID-19 outbreak on metro commuting ridership in Wuhan, where the novel virus was first reported. The results of interrupted time-series (ITS) analysis showed that metro commuting ridership sharply dropped in the short term under the impact of the outbreak in the epicenter, rebounded rapidly as the pandemic eased, and it returned to pre-pandemic levels in six months. Furthermore, there was a noticeable spatial heterogeneity in the rebound. Urban centers, especially employment centers, recovered faster than other areas. In addition, the number of residents, number of bus stops, number of enterprises around a metro station and being a transfer station had a positive effect on metro ridership, while street length, number of restaurants, and number of metro exits had a negative effect. These findings may help local governments and metro managers develop sustainable metro operations and infection prevention policies to better cope with the impact of the pandemic and beyond.

As cruise ships call at many ports and passengers come from all over the world, it is very easy to carry viruses on cruise ships. Under the control of the epidemic situation on board, the solid waste generated by them should be scientifically treated to prevent the spread of infectious diseases such as COVID-19 pneumonia. Therefore, Reasonable selection of waste disposal ports and formulation of unloading plans are directly related to the resumption of cruise operations. This study considers the cost and risk of waste disposal, uses robust optimization to deal with waste volume, increases the scenarios of port service interruption due to epidemics and other reasons, and proposes a variety of emergency strategies. Finally, the relevant strategies are selected according to the decision-maker's preference for cost and risk;By solving the relevant examples, the optimal choice of the cruise ship waste disposal port under the epidemic situation is given, which verifies the validity and feasibility of the model. The research helps to improve the management of cruise waste during the post-epidemic period, and has practical value and guiding significance for the normal operation and development of the global cruise market. © 2023 SPIE.

ABSTRACT

Background: Stereotactic radiotherapy (SBRT) is a new therapeutic option for patients with scar related ventricular tachycardia (VT). Objective(s): To describe our experience with the use of SBRT for the treatment of recurrent VT in patients with Chagas Cardiomyopathy (CCM) in whom catheter ablation is not an option. Method(s): We selected patients with Chagas Disease that underwent SBRT for recurrent VT treatment. The target sites of SBRT were planned based on CMR and CT reconstruction on ADAS software, bipolar voltage maps from previous CA procedures and VT morphology induced on a electrophysiologic study performed SBRT planning. Target sites were decided together by electrophysiology and radiation oncology group. Result(s): We performed SBRT in six CCM patients July 2021 to July 2022. Most patients were male (66.7%), mean age 62.3+/-5.7 years-old and EF 28.5% (Q1: 20 Q3:42.7). One patient (16.7%) had two prior catheter ablation, four (66.7%) had one and one patient had no prior ablation, but had severe pulmonary fibrosis after COVID and was O2 dependent. The mean PTV (planning target volume) was 85+/-14 mL and the ITV (internal target volume) was 29+/-4 ml, with safe constraints regarding the esophagus and stomach. In a mean FU of 244+/-173days, 3 (50%) patients presented VT recurrence after blanking period. Two patients died 86 and 50 days after SBRT. The median number of VT episodes reduced from 13 (6.25;44.75) to 7.5 (3;7.5) (P = 0.093). All alive patients stop presenting VT in a median period of 174 (Q1: 44.75: Q3: 199) days, being at the end of the follow-up in a median of 196 (Q1: 137;Q3: 246) days without new VT episodes. ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 pandemic is the most disastrous health event of the twenty-first century with significant impacts on the economy, institutions, organizations and people's well-being and lifestyle. Risk perception is a knowledge process that manifests itself in risk behavior and reflects people's experiences, beliefs and social influences. The management of risk perception is essential in contributing to people's protective behaviors in the presence of health risks. In Cuba, one of its significant effects is reflected in the psychology of individuals, despite policies to mitigate its consequences. Minimizing COVID-19 transmission requires the application of effective policies that contribute with adequate perceptions, depending on the risk factors. The goal of this research is to develop a system of actions that can contribute to the transition of a favorable scenario for the management of risk perception regarding COVID-19 in Cuba according to the new normality and through the use of a scenario planning methodology. The findings allow characterizing the current scenario and proposing actions and indicators in order to achieve the most favorable scenario for risk perception management related to COVID-19 from a geographic perspective. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2022.

ABSTRACT

PurposeSports tourism was strongly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, but there is no consensus on what sports tourism should look like in the post-pandemic period. This study explores the future of sports tourism in light of the COVID-19 pandemic and provides an alternative paradigm model.Design/methodology/approachData were collected by interviewing sports tourism experts. Data analysis was based on the continuous comparison method during three stages of open, axial and selective coding.FindingsThe findings point to the complexity of the future sports tourism industry. Post-COVID-19 sports tourism strongly depends on environmental forces and targeted support, with strategies focused on tourists' safety and security, digitalization of the industry, and new employment opportunities.Originality/valueThis study contributes to the body of knowledge on sports tourism by providing answers to the current challenges, threats and opportunities associated with the pandemic. The proposed paradigm model could be a guideline for sports tourism practitioners and policymakers to accelerate recovery from COVID-19 in a sustainable and resilient manner.

ABSTRACT

Penang is often known as a multilingual and multiethnic city in Malaysia. Its diversity of growing population based on its pre-colonial history and evidence of different ethnic groups living together has resulted in an emergence of a variety of languages today. Henceforth, this chapter embarks on an examination of languages that appear on public health signs in Penang. Conceptualising the study within the framework of language planning and policy, it dissects the languages observed on COVID-19 related signs that were designed by the multiple layers of agency in Penang. The findings are hierarchically organised as follows: (a) state government, (b) district government, (c) large enterprise, and (d) small enterprise. Although a trend of dynamism is reflected in the findings, they still mark social inequality for people's access to public advice related to the COVID-19 outbreak in Penang. The chapter concludes that the linguistic landscape of Penang is a mosaic closely connected to the social and political processes and urges for an increased use of community languages to safeguard vulnerable groups in Penang and across the globe. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2022.

ABSTRACT

The concept of new vocationalism reached its height in the 1990s and 2000s as views evolved regarding how community colleges should provide relevant vocational education for students. The concept of new vocationalism is here brought into the present moment by mapping theoretical lineages and emphasizing the current and future practical implications at the nexus of the community college sector and a post-COVID-19 economy. Reforms centered around the principles of new vocationalism have led to more inclusive opportunities for learners from varied diverse and marginalized backgrounds, though the influence within career development and community colleges often goes unrecognized. Implications for educational leaders are discussed, including refocusing outcomes on the needs of diverse learners and bridging the gap between students' academic and vocational educations. Specific considerations are also provided to further solidify new vocationalism principles in workforce and professional development programs within community college and career development contexts. Consideration first needs to be given to building programming that develops students' professional identity with a willingness (from both student and educator) to push back against exclusionary ideas of professional, professionalism, and industry practices that are not focused on employee inclusion. Further, equity and access should remain foundational to all programs if these structures are to remain relevant. Specific recommendations are given for incorporating the equity-mindedness approach when developing workforce and professional development programs and curriculum, with increased consideration being given regarding the reality of how well workforce and professional development programs are currently preparing students for life-long career success, growth, and adaptability.

ABSTRACT

The tourism and hospitality sectors all over the world have been somewhat decimated by the COVID-19 pandemic. However, there are still many hotels operating today despite the calamity. Given the complexity and unpredictability of the hotel industry environment, this study enhanced the Crafting Strategy (CS) notion by adding the experimenting dimension and provides empirical support for the enhanced CS capability to predict hotel resilience, which are the novelties of this study. This study explained the relationship between CS, planned resilience (PR), reactive resilience (RR), and resilience outcomes (RO). A mixed methods analysis was used to analyze data from 150 hotel senior managers in Bali Island, the hardest hit tourist destination in Indonesia. The result revealed that experimenting is indeed a strong contributor to CS. Furthermore, CS shows a positive and significant impact to PR and RR. PR also has a strong influence on RR and the relationship between PR and RO (recoverability, adaptation, and innovation) is mediated by RR. Positive impacts of recoverability and adaptation on financial performance were also shown. In conclusion, hotels need to build and strengthen both their PR, and RR as they are equally important for the RO that is crucial for sustainability.

Introduction: Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) are funded by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) to provide primary care services to low-income and underinsured individuals. Los Angeles County (LAC) is a large, diverse county with greater than 10.2 million residents and 8 distinct Service Planning Areas (SPAs) that represent specific geographic regions with variable resources. We aimed to describe colorectal cancer (CRC) screening rates (CRCSR) and the screening rate change (SRCs) in LAC overall and for each SPA between 2019 and 2020 to determine where resources are most needed for CRCSR recovery following the COVID-19 pandemic. Method(s): Our data source was the Uniform Data System (UDS), which includes quality data for the FQHCs funded by HRSA. We determined 2019 and 2020 CRCSR for LAC FQHCs overall and for each FQHC, including average-risk patients age 50-74. We then separated FQHCs into quartiles based on SRC and performed mixed-effects logistic regression to determine FQHC-level characteristics associated with the largest decline in CRCSR from 2019 to 2020 (i.e., predictors of category SRC Q1). Lastly, we determined SRC for each SPA in LAC. Result(s): In 2019, there were 58 FQHCs in LAC with 326,473 patients eligible for CRC screening. In 2020, there were 59 FQHCs with 350,405 eligible patients. The median 2020 CRCSR in LAC FQHCs was 37.3%, down from 48.0% in 2019 (2020 median SRC= -9.6%) (Table). In the regression model among all LAC FQHCs, those with higher proportions of patients preferring a non-English language had significantly higher odds of having the largest decline in CRCSR from 2019 to 2020 (SRC Q1) (aOR=3.25, 95% CI=1.22-8.65;data not shown). CRCSR decreased from 2019 to 2020 in all SPAs with SRC ranging from -17.0% (South Bay) to -1.4% (West LA) (Figure). Conclusion(s): In Los Angeles County FQHCs, CRC screening rates were higher than the national FQHC average in 2019 however declined considerably between 2019 and 2020. The decline in CRC screening rates was highest in FQHCs serving a higher proportion of patients with a preference for a non-English language and varied by county region. Our findings highlight the need for targeted measures, including language-appropriate resources, to improve CRC screening uptake in FQHCs that provide care to some of the most historically marginalized individuals.
