ABSTRACT

Objectives This study aims to compare the severity of chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) symptoms pre- and post-COVID-19 infection and estimate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the use of intranasal corticosteroids (ICS) among adult CRS patients. Methods This was an observational retrospective cohort study conducted at King Abdulaziz University Hospital, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, between July 2022 and October 2022. Adult CRS patients with sino-nasal outcomes test-22 (SNOT-22) scores documented prior to March 2020, marking the occurrence of Saudi Arabia's initial reported case of COVID-19, were requested to complete the SNOT-22 questionnaire following COVID-19 infection. A comparison was subsequently made between the two scores obtained. Results The study enrolled a total of 33 patients, with 16 assigned to the control group and 17 with a history of COVID-19 infection. The mean age of the patients was 43 years, and the majority (52%) were males. Statistical analysis did not reveal any statistically significant differences in the total SNOT-22 scores or domain-level scores between the two groups. Furthermore, the use of ICS during the COVID-19 pandemic did not show any significant associations, except for patients with asthma, where 80% of them used ICS during the pandemic (p=0.0073). Conclusion There was no statistically significant disparity observed in the SNOT-22 scores between patients who tested positive for COVID-19 and those who did not. The use of corticosteroids during the COVID-19 pandemic was found to be more prevalent in this study compared to previous studies conducted before the pandemic, particularly among patients with asthma. The use of ICS during the pandemic was not associated with the presence of polyps, functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS), allergic rhinitis, or eczema.

ABSTRACT

PurposeIn the light of high reliance on digital technology to mitigate the consequences of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and its containment measures, this study investigates the factors influencing firms' decision to adopt digital technologies during COVID-19 in four Middle East and Northern African (MENA) countries, namely, Egypt, Jordan, Morocco and Tunisia.Design/methodology/approachThe study used the International Labour Organization (ILO)/Economic Research Forum (ERF) COVID-19 - MENA Monitor Enterprise Survey (CMMENT), comprising 5,480 firms, surveyed during 2020-2021. The empirical model is estimated using the linear probability model (LPM) to address the problem of unobserved heterogeneity between firms, countries, and time.FindingsThe results revealed that firm characteristics, such as firm size and foreign ownership, encourage digital transformation in the business sector. Moreover, firms that face challenges during the pandemic, comply with the containment measures, and receive government assistance are more likely to adopt digital solutions. Furthermore, the results indicated that firms operating in services sector have a higher likelihood to adopt digital technology. Disaggregating the total sample into several sub-samples, the results are robust across countries and technology types, supporting the initial hypothesis that COVID-19 encourages digital transformation in the MENA region.Originality/valueThe study has numerous contributions. First, to the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the sole study that uses micro data collected during the COVID-19 to examine the factors influencing firms' decision to adopt and invest in digital solutions in the MENA countries. Second, the paper employs the LPM estimator to address the issue of unobserved heterogeneity between firms, countries and time. Finally, the paper offers some practical recommendations for accelerating digital transformation in MENA region.

ABSTRACT

The main aim of the study was to assess various ENT symptoms in COVID 19 patients, also to investigate the severity of ENT symptoms among COVID 19 patients and find their relation on basis of scores among five discrete domains of SNOT 22 (Sino nasal Outcome Test). A prospective observational study was conducted among 135 patients between 18 to 75 years of age, in the month of September 2020 with COVID-19 infection having mild, moderate disease who were admitted to our hospital. Subjects were divided into groups according to their presenting ENT symptoms based on age, gender and other comorbidities and differences between the groups were examined. The sinonasal symptoms were assessed using the SNOT 22 questionnaire. A strong statistical significance with loss of smell and taste sensation was noted in patients above the age of 40 years. It was also noted that the patients who presented with cough above the age of 40 years were significantly more. Evaluation of sinonasal symptoms using SNOT 22 questionnaire showed that Extranasal rhinologic symptoms, Psychological dysfunction, Sleep dysfunction had significantly higher association among patients who were more than 40 years. We observed that, Extranasal rhinologic symptoms were significantly higher among males than females. There is thus an emergent need to develop a uniform tool to assess the various ENT symptoms. In our study we assessed the patients with COVID 19 using a standard questionnaire to observe the symptomatology, psychological and sleep dysfunctions due to sinonasal issues, and to closely understand the relationship of various symptoms in a meticulous manner.

ABSTRACT

With the pandemic of COVID-19, the application of quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs), which can be used in SARS-CoV-2 disinfection products, has increased substantially. QACs cumulated in sewer system are ultimately deposited and enriched in sludge. QACs in the environment can adversely affect human health and the environment. In this study, a liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry method was established for the simultaneous determination of 25 QACs in sludge samples. Ultrasonic extraction and filtration of the samples was performed using a 50 mM hydrochloric acid-methanol solution. The samples were separated by liquid chromatography and detected in multiple reaction monitoring mode. The matrix effects of the sludge on the 25 QACs ranged from - 25.5% to 7.2%. All substances showed good linearity in the range of 0.5-100 ng/mL, with all determination coefficients (R2) greater than 0.999. The method detection limits (MDLs) were 9.0 ng/g for alkyltrimethylammonium chloride (ATMAC), 3.0 ng/g for benzylalkyldimethylammonium chloride (BAC), and 3.0 ng/g for dialkyldimethylammonium chloride (DADMAC). The spiked recovery rates were in the range of 74-107%, while the relative standard deviations were in the range of 0.8-20.6%. Considering its sensitivity, accuracy, and easy operation, the proposed method in this study was used to determine 22 sludge samples collected from a comprehensive wastewater treatment plant. The results showed that the concentrations of ΣATMACs, ΣBACs, and ΣDADMACs were 19.684, 3.199, and 8.344 µg/g, respectively. The main components included ATMAC-C16, ATMAC-C18, ATMAC-C20, ATMAC-C22, BAC-C12, and DADMAC-C18:C18, with concentrations exceeding 1.0 µg/g. The concentration relationships of different components in the congeners showed that some components were of similar origin.

ABSTRACT

The present pandemic disease COVID-19 demands an urgent need for more efficient antiviral drugs against SARS-CoV-2. Computational drug designing and discovery enable us to explore ethnomedicinal plants as a source of various lead molecules that can be used against present and future pathogens. Adiantum latifolium Lam., a common fern, is resistant to pathogens mainly due to the presence of various phytochemicals having antimicrobial properties. In our previous study, 3ß-acetoxy-21α-H-hop-22(29)ene, a terpenoid has been characterized from the methanol extract of leaves of A. latifolium. The manuscript evaluates the antiviral potency of the compound against SARS-CoV-2 through molecular docking method. Proteins essential for SARS-CoV-2 multiplication in host cells are the target sites. The study revealed strong binding affinity of the compound for all the ten proteins selected, including seven nonstructural proteins, two structural proteins and one receptor protein, with a binding energy of -4.67 to -8.76 kcal/mol. MDS and MMPBSA analysis of the best ranked complex further confirmed the results. The multitargeted compound can be considered as a natural lead molecule in drug designing against COVID-19, but requires wet-lab experimentation and clinical trials.Communicated by Ramaswamy H. ABSTRACT

The SARS-CoV-2 virus causes a contagious disease known as Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19). It began spreading globally in 2019 and is still producing pandemics today. Different COVID-19 vaccinations offer protection against this illness. Pfizer-BioNTech and Sinopharm were the two vaccine manufacturers with the highest usage in Iraq. Both vaccines use a different method to activate the immune system. This study seeks to compare the IL-22, IL-37, and IL-38 levels in those who received either the Sinopharm or the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccination. IL-22, IL-37, IL-38 levels have been shown to be upregulated in COVID-19 patients. In this study, IL-22, IL-37, and IL -38 levels were tested in 80 healthy controls and 100 COVID-19 patients 14-21 days after recovery. Additionally, people who received the Sinopharm or Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine (50 each) were monitored 21 days after the first dosage and 21 days after the second dose. In comparison to controls, serum levels were noticeably higher in recovered patients. Except for the first dosage of Pfizer BioNTech, the first and second doses of Sinopharm and Pfizer BioNTech were linked to considerably higher levels of IL-22, IL-37, and IL-38 compared to controls or recovered patients. where IL-22, IL -37, and IL-38 levels did not show significant differences compared to recovered patients. In conclusion, lower IL-37 and IL-38 molecule levels were linked to recovery from COVID-19, although these levels remained considerably greater in recovered patients compared to uninfected controls. Vaccination with Sinopharm or Pfizer-BioNTech confirmed the up-regulating effects of SARS-CoV-2 on IL-22, IL-37, and IL-38 levels.

ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 pandemic hit Italy very harshly in two waves, the first in spring 2020 and the second between the autumn and the winter of the same year. Data show some major differences between the two phases;in particular, the first wave caused fewer infections but had a higher fatality rate. These pandemic evolutions, together with modified social conditions, called for a rapid adaptation of containment measures, i.e. stricter and homogeneous in the first wave, flexible and diversified in the second wave. The interrupted time series analysis applied to daily data on new cases yields positive results for both interventions in flattening the infection curve. The policies achieved almost the same percentage of positive cases avoided in the two waves. Adaptive and diversified policies based on learning from previous results seem to be suitable for this kind of decision-making in conditions of uncertainty. © 2023 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

ABSTRACT

This paper examines whether the economic crisis induced by the COVID-19 pandemic exhibits a Schumpeterian "cleansing” of less productive firms. Using firm-level data collected for 34 economies up to 18 months into the crisis, the study finds that less productive firms have a higher probability of permanently closing during the crisis, suggesting that the process of cleansing out unproductive activities is occurring. The paper also uncovers strong and negative relationships of firm exit with digital presence and with innovation. These relationships are driven by small firms. The study further finds that a burdensome business environment increases the probability of firm exit, also driven by small firms, and that a negative relationship exists between firm exit and age. Finally, evidence shows that the cleansing process is disrupted in countries which have introduced policies imposing a moratorium on insolvency procedures.Plain English SummaryThe purpose of this analysis is to investigate whether firms that are more productive are less likely to cease operation during the economic crisis induced by the COVID-19 pandemic. To verify this hypothesis, the paper uses data on firm characteristics, productivity, and status of operation from 34 countries. The data on firm characteristics and productivity were collected before the crisis, while data on the operating status were collected within 18 months since the appearance of the coronavirus. The results of the paper show that indeed, more productive firms are more likely to survive the crisis. In addition, businesses that have been in operation for longer, or ones which have a website or have introduced a new product in the years before the crisis are more likely to continue existing. The positive role of digitalization and innovation is true especially for small firms. Conversely, those businesses which have to spend more time in compliance with government regulations are less likely to survive. The policy implications show the importance of digitalization and innovation, the vulnerabilities of small firms, and the significance of good governance.

ABSTRACT

This paper analyses the effects of containment measures and monetary and fiscal responses on US financial markets during the Covid-19 pandemic. More specifically, it applies fractional integration methods to analyse their impact on the daily S&P500, the US Treasury Bond Index (USTB), the S&P Green Bond Index (GREEN) and the Dow Jones (DJ) Islamic World Market Index (ISLAM) over the period 1/01/2020-10/03/2021. The results suggest that all four indices are highly persistent and exhibit orders of integration close to 1. A small degree of mean reversion is observed only for the S&P500 under the assumption of white noise errors and USTB with autocorrelated errors; therefore, market efficiency appears to hold in most cases. The mortality rate, surprisingly, seems to have affected stock and bond prices positively with autocorrelated errors. As for the policy responses, both the containment and fiscal measures had a rather limited impact, whilst there were significant announcement effects which lifted markets, especially in the case of monetary announcements. There is also evidence of a significant, positive response to changes in the effective Federal funds rate, which suggests that the financial industry, mainly benefiting from interest rises, plays a dominant role.

ABSTRACT

Background: Face mask is the first line to protect the respiratory mucosa from the coronavirus particles in aerocells and droplets and without this, the exposure of the mucosa to the virus and allergens trigger the immune and inflammatory system. These lead to Allergic Rhinitis (AR) symptoms or virus infection. Aim: This study discusses about the effects of face mask on the severity of AR symptoms using the Sino-Nasal Outcome Test (SNOT-22) in AR cases during the Corona Virus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Method: In this cross-sectional study, 54 cases previously diagnosed as moderate and severe AR based on Allergic Rhinitis and its Impact on Asthma and Visual Analog Scale score referred to the tertiary allergy clinic were involved, while 5 of them were excluded. AR symptoms before and during the pandemic were compared based on the SNOT-22 questionnaire. Demographics, AR severity, and comorbidities were registered. Results: The mean age was 31.4 ± 13.5 years with the male-female ratio of 1.4. The mean SNOT-22 score was 36.1 ± 20.3 before and 29.5 ± 16.8 during the pandemic. Although 36.7% (n: 18) of all participants had severe symptoms before the pandemic, 10.2% (n: 5) had severe AR symptoms during the pandemic. 53.0% (n: 26) of patients had moderate AR symptoms, and 36.7% (n: 18) had mild AR symptoms in the pandemic. There was no significant difference between each paired subgroup in AR symptom changes but the symptom improvement was significant in most of the subgroups when compared to the pre-pandemic period. Smoking had an adverse effect on AR symptoms (p: 0.034). Conclusion: Face mask affects the quality of life in AR patients and improves the severity of AR symptoms during COVID-19 pandemic. Smoking worsens this severity. Age, gender, pet ownership, underlying conditions, and previous COVID-19 infection were not associated with AR symptoms severity and alteration in the AR individuals' quality of life during the COVID-19 pandemic.

ABSTRACT

The current generation data is most valuable in people's life, because data only decided people's health affected in COVID'19 or not, and not only COVID'19 all related to health issues data. To analyze and predict the health issue data by using Machine Learning Algorithm. This prediction issues data has most confidential data and need more security. So, applying the previous method is ChaCha method. This method focusing only performance not fully security. The new method is BR22-01. This method has five stages. The 1st stage is finding the secret key x & y value. The 2nd stage is applying key in Eq. (1). The 3rd stage is merge all values into single row then pair from left and swap the values in the HS matrix. The 4th stage is applying key in Eq. (2). The 5th stage is merge all values into single line then pair from left and swap the values in the HC matrix but reverse. The new method has provide good security as well as performance while compared to ChaCha method. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

ABSTRACT

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted people's psychological functioning, including how they cope with anxiety. This study aimed to assess the role of coping styles in the relationship between COVID-19 anxiety and Washing ObsessiveCompulsive Disorder (W-OCD) symptoms. Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed on 420 people living in Kashan city (Iran) from March to April, 2020. Participants were selected by the convenience sampling method due to the difficulties brought about by COVID-19 and completed the contamination subscale of the Padua Inventory, COVID-19 anxiety inventory, and coping strategies scale. Data were analyzed by structural equation modeling (SEM) using AMOS-22. Results: The results revealed that emotion-focused, somatization and social support coping strategies were significantly associated with W-OCD symptoms. Also, there was a significant correlation between COVID-19 anxiety and the W-OCD symptoms. SEM results revealed that emotion-focused and somatization coping strategies positively mediated the relationship between COVID-19 and W-OCD symptoms. Conclusion: Emotion-focused and somatization coping strategies increase W-OCD symptoms following COVID-19 anxiety. Psychoeducation interventions addressing COVID-19's physical and psychological impacts on health, discriminating the rational and adaptive behavior and obsessive and compulsive behaviors, and restricting the information gathering from numerous sources, which may lead to increased negative emotions, might be helpful. © 2023 Bentham Science Publishers.

ABSTRACT

This paper investigates the impact of recent recessions on the origins of productivity growth. We show how business cycles affect productivity growth, with particular attention for the impact of job reallocation and labor hoarding. We find evidence that recessions induce productivity enhancing job reallocation in manufacturing but not in services industries and show that labor hoarding mitigates this cleansing effect of recessions. Furthermore, we show how entry and exit of firms and industry dynamics shape the evolution of aggregate productivity.Plain English SummaryDuring recessions, governments support firms via temporary unemployment programs to save jobs. A side effect is that job reallocation and exit of low-productive firms can be distorted, while such cleansing effects typically spur productivity growth. This paper investigates how recessions affect productivity growth, with particular attention for the impact of job reallocation and labor hoarding. We find evidence that recessions induce productivity enhancing job reallocation in manufacturing but not in services industries and show that labor hoarding mitigates this cleansing effect of recessions. Furthermore, we show how entry and exit of firms and industry dynamics shape the evolution of aggregate productivity. As many developed economies struggle with a slowdown in productivity growth, it is important that policy makers understand the impact of recessions on the micro origins of productivity growth and are aware of how temporary policies during recessions could affect long-term productivity growth.

ABSTRACT

Risk prediction models are fundamental to effectively triage incoming COVID-19 patients. However, current triaging methods often have poor predictive performance, are based on variables that are expensive to measure, and often lead to hard-to-interpret decisions. We introduce two new classification methods that can predict COVID-19 mortality risk from the automatic analysis of routine clinical variables with high accuracy and interpretability. SVM22-GASS and Clinical-GASS classifiers leverage machine learning methods and clinical expertise, respectively. Both were developed using a derivation cohort of 499 patients from the first wave of the pandemic and were validated with an independent validation cohort of 250 patients from the second pandemic phase. The Clinical-GASS classifier is a threshold-based classifier that leverages the General Assessment of SARS-CoV-2 Severity (GASS) score, a COVID-19-specific clinical score that recently showed its effectiveness in predicting the COVID-19 mortality risk. The SVM22-GASS model is a binary classifier that non-linearly processes clinical data using a Support Vector Machine (SVM). In this study, we show that SMV22-GASS was able to predict the mortality risk of the validation cohort with an AUC of 0.87 and an accuracy of 0.88, better than most scores previously developed. Similarly, the Clinical-GASS classifier predicted the mortality risk of the validation cohort with an AUC of 0.77 and an accuracy of 0.78, on par with other established and emerging machine-learning-based methods. Our results demonstrate the feasibility of accurate COVID-19 mortality risk prediction using only routine clinical variables, readily collected in the early stages of hospital admission.

ABSTRACT

Background: This study analyzed serum concentrations of interleukin (IL)-22 and IL-33 (pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines) in 90 patients with mild/moderate coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and 90 healthy controls. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kits were used to measure IL-22 and IL-33 concentrations. Results: Median (interquartile range) concentrations of IL-22 and IL-33 were significantly higher in patients than in controls (IL-22: 18.6 [18.0-19.3] vs. 13.9 [12.1-14.9] pg/mL, probability [p] < 0.001; IL-33: 37.8 [35.3-43.0] vs. 24.1 [23.0-26.2] pg/mL, p < 0.001). As indicated by the area under the curve (AUC), IL-22 and IL-33 were excellent predictors of COVID-19 (AUC = 0.95 and 0.892, respectively). Multinomial logistic regression analysis demonstrated that individuals with high production (> control median) of IL-22 (odds ratio = 17.80 [95% CI: 6.48-48.90]; p = 0.001) and IL-33 (odds ratio = 19.0 [95% CI: 7.4-48.6]; p = 0.001) were more likely to develop COVID-19. A positive correlation was found between IL-22 and IL-33 and both cytokines also showed positive correlations with granulocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio and erythrocyte sedimentation rate in all participants. Conclusions: IL-22 and IL-33 showed up-regulated concentrations in the serum of patients with mild/moderate COVID-19. Both cytokines may have prognostic value for COVID-19 along with their association with disease risk.

ABSTRACT

Purpose To investigate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on middle-aged and older patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) who underwent spinal fusion. Methods The subjects were 252 AIS patients who underwent spinal fusion between 1968 and 1988. The surveys were performed before the COVID-19 pandemic (a primary survey in 2014) and during the pandemic (a secondary survey in 2022). The self-administered questionnaires were mailed to the patients. We analyzed 35 patients (33 females and two males) who replied to both surveys. Results The pandemic had low impacts on 11 patients (31.4%). Two patients reported refraining from seeing a doctor because they were concerned about going to the clinic or hospital, eight reported that the pandemic impacted their work, and five reported fewer opportunities to go out (based on multiple-choice answers). Twenty-four patients reported that their lives were unaffected by the pandemic. No significant differences were detected between both surveys for Scoliosis Research Society-22 (SRS-22) in any domains (function, pain, self-image, mental, or satisfaction). The Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) questionnaires revealed a significant worsening of the survey during the pandemic compared with the survey before the pandemic. There was no significant difference in the impact of the pandemic between the ODI deterioration group (27.8%) and the ODI stable group (35.3%). Conclusion The COVID-19 pandemic had a low impact on 31.4% of middle-aged and older patients with AIS who underwent spinal fusion. The impact of the pandemic did not significantly differ between the groups with ODI deteriorations and the groups with stable ODI. The pandemic had a smaller impact on AIS patients at a minimum of 33 years after surgery.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: The long-term complications of COVID-19 appear as significant health problems. However, the long-term muscle decline in these patients is poorly characterized. METHODS: We investigated the age-related muscle decline, termed sarcopenia, before and following the COVID-19 infection in older male patients (n = 87). We evaluated handgrip strength (HGS) and functional capacity (short physical performance battery; SPPB) in COVID-19 patients 7-42 days before and one week and 6-month after COVID-19 infection. We used ELISA tests to measure plasma c-terminal agrin fragment-22 (CAF22), c-reactive protein (CRP), and 8-isoprostanes as markers of degraded neuromuscular junctions, inflammation, and oxidative stress, respectively. RESULTS: Before the COVID-19 infection, 54 patients were non-sarcopenic, and 25 patients were sarcopenic, while eight patients subsequently developed sarcopenia. All patients exhibited reduced HGS and SPPB, while elevated CAF22, CRP, and 8-isoprostane levels one week post-COVID-19 infection (all p < 0.05). At six months post-COVID-19 infection, the HGS, SPPB, CAF22, CRP, and 8-isoprostanes were partly restored to baseline levels (all p < 0.05). Correlation analysis revealed that the plasma CAF22 had a significant correlation with HGS, SPPB, and COVID-19 disease severity. CAF22 also demonstrated significant areas under the curves in diagnosing sarcopenia at all three time-points. CONCLUSION: Altogether, the muscle detriment due to COVID-19 persists six months post-infection, and plasma CAF22 may be helpful to detect muscle and functional decline in these patients. Timely evaluation and intervention of sarcopenia may be critical in COVID-19 treatment.

ABSTRACT

In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, more firms than ever before have enabled their employees to work from home. Based on a representative firm survey in Germany, surveying 2.000 firms per month throughout the course of the pandemic (October 2020 until June 2022), this paper provides suggestive evidence concerning the effects of working from home (WFH) at different points in time during the pandemic and discusses implications for the future of work. We assess the potential of WFH in Germany to be 25–30% of private-sector employees. On the firm side, we find that higher WFH use is positively related to business success during the crisis, with increased employee productivity and employees working more hours when remote being possible mechanisms. Larger firms in particular are open towards expanding their WFH offerings in the future. During the pandemic, firms have experienced that WFH has worked well in many respects (e.g., productivity of employees, quality of work performed) and, for the future, they are willing to facilitate WFH in order to give their employees more flexibility, and to be considered an attractive employer. However, working on site brings advantages (e.g., communication, cooperation and onboarding of new employees) firms will not want to sacrifice, pointing towards a hybrid model of work.

ABSTRACT

In our study, we aimed to evaluate the significance of specific cytokines in blood plasma as predictive markers of COVID-associated mortality. Materials and methods. In plasma samples of 29 patients with PCR-confirmed COVID-19 we measured the concentrations of 47 molecules. These molecules included: interleukins and selected pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-1alpha, IL-1beta, IL-2, IL-3, IL-4, IL-5, IL-6, IL-7, IL-9, IL-12 (p40), IL-12 (p70), IL-13, IL-15, IL-17A/CTLA8, IL-17-E/IL-25, IL-17F, IL-18, IL-22, IL-27, IFNalpha2, IFNgamma, TNFalpha, TNFbeta/Lymphotoxin-alpha(LTA));chemokines (CCL2/MCP-1, CCL3/MIP-1alpha, CCL4/MIP-1beta, CCL7/MCP-3, CCL11/Eotaxin, CCL22/MDC, CXCL1/GROalpha, CXCL8/IL-8, CXCL9/MIG, CXCL10/IP-10, CX3CL1/Fractalkine);anti-inflammatory cytokines (IL-1Ra, IL-10);growth factors (EGF, FGF-2/FGF-basic, Flt-3 Ligand, G-CSF, M-CSF, GM-CSF, PDGF-AA, PDGFAB/BB, TGFalpha, VEGF-A);and sCD40L. We used multiplex analysis based on xMAP technology (Luminex, USA) using Luminex MagPix. As controls, we used plasma samples of 20 healthy individuals. Based on the results, we applied Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) analysis and Area Under Curve (AUC) values to compare two different predictive tests and to choose the optimal division point for disease outcome (survivors/non-survivors). To find optimal biomarker combinations, we as used cytokines concentrations as dependent variables to grow a regression tree using JMP 16 Software.Results. Out of 47 studied cytokines/chemokines/growth factors, we picked four pro-inflammatory cytokines as having high significance in evaluation of COVID-19 outcome: IL-6, IL-8, IL-15, and IL-18. Based on the results received, we assume that the highest significance in terms of predicting the outcome of acute COVID-19 belongs to IL-6 and IL-18. Conclusion. Analyzing concentrations of IL-6 and IL-18 before administering treatment may prove valuable in terms of outcome prognosis. Copyright © Arsentieva N.A. et al., 2022.
