Optimizing Sedation in Patients Receiving Mechanical Ventilation

ABSTRACT
Analgesia and sedation management are key elements of care for patients receiving mechanical ventilation. The excessive use of sedatives can lead to serious short- and long-term complications;conversely the inadequate management of pain and agitation can further complicate patientscourse of illness. Delirium is highly prevalent in critically ill patients, frequently underrecognized, and associated with adverse outcomes. Early mobilization can help reduce sedation use and may improve delirium management. In this chapter we address ideal sedation management in critically ill patients, and how it can positively impact patients wellbeing.
