ABSTRACT
The World Health Organization declared the COVID-19 outbreak a pandemic in March 2020. The uncertainty and social isolation due to the new virus imply mobilization of personality resources. A comparison of coping strategies of people affected by COVID-19 during the first wave of the pandemic in Bulgaria, in relation to gender, age, nature of contact with COVID-19 (medical staff or patients) and education was conducted. Out of 113 individuals studied, 74 were medical staff and 38 patients. Three questionnaires, assessing stress level, coping strategies and anxiety were used. Three main coping strategies have been identified (1) Emotionally focused coping strategies, (2) Proactive coping strategies, and (3) Anticipatory coping strategies. The use of each of the three strategies changed with age, with emotionally focused strategies more common for women, proactive strategies more typical for men, and anticipatory strategies without differences between both sexes, gradually decreasing with age. People between 40- and 60-years old and those with higher education showed low values of emotionally focused strategies and high values of proactive strategies. Respondents evaluated the pandemic as highly threatening and stressful which can be explained by the fact they are patients and healthcare professionals. The study is beneficial for GPs, who are an important link between the patient and inpatient facilities, as it clarifies the psycho-emotional coping strategies of first-line medical staff and patients with COVID-19. The research is a prerequisite for better and adequate primary health care. These results draw attention to the main issues related to mental health of the affected by COVID-19 and are essential for future action and decision-making.
