ABSTRACT
The ease of performing a laboratory test near to the patient, at the point-of-care, has resulted in the integration of point-of-care tests into healthcare treatment algorithms. However, their importance in patient care necessitates regular oversight and enforcement of best laboratory practices. This review discusses why this oversight is needed, it’s importance in ensuring quality results and processes that can be placed to ensure point-of-care tests are chosen carefully so that both oversight can be maintained and patient care is improved. Furthermore, it highlights the importance of delivering focused webinars and continuing education in a variety of formats. © 2021 International Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine.
