Enhancing student participation and engagement in remote learning environments

ABSTRACT
As the number of coronavirus cases increased throughout the world, most higher educational institutions rapidly shifted their face-to-face classes to remote learning without providing sufficient training for instructors. One of the challenges they faced during this period was enhancing students' motivation and engagement in their learning. Many scholars believe that students' academic engagement is an important criterion in assessing the quality and effectiveness of teaching and learning in educational institutions. An examination of previous studies on student engagement indicated that many factors could affect students' behavioral, cognitive, and emotional engagement in a remote learning environment. Some of these factors are related to students, and some of them are associated with instructors. Moreover, studies indicated that strong interpersonal relationships, interaction, and close communication between student-instructor and student-student could create a positive learning environment and enhance students' engagement. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2021.
