Concomitant hyperglycaemic crisis with SARS-CoV-2 infection: A case series

ABSTRACT

Background:

SARS-CoV-2, the novel coronavirus identified for the first time in December 2019 in the city of Wuhan, China was identified for the first time in the Colombian territory on March 6, 2020. By November 2020, it had affected more than 47 million people and caused more than a million deaths worldwide. It has been observed that comorbidities such as diabetes can be associated with more severe forms of the disease and higher mortality rates. Hyperglycaemic crisis, referring to diabetic ketoacidosis and hyperosmolar nonketotic state can be precipitated by COVID-19. The following describes the cases of 15 patients who were admitted for COVID-19 and also had a hyperglycaemic crisis in a hospital in Medellín, Colombia. © 2021
