ABSTRACT
Seasonal influenza is a highly contagious viral respiratory disease, which can affect anyone of any age. It is a worldwide problem, and in the UK the illness most commonly occurs in the winter months. For the majority, symptoms resolve without treatment, but for some the condition brings with it complications, leading to a more serious illness, hospitalisation and sometimes death. This article will look at risk groups and complications, with reference to COVID-19 and the possible scenario of influenza and COVID-19 occurring together this winter. This article aims to give nurses an insight into this disease, helping them recognise its presentation, along with the importance of vaccination for all those for whom it is recommended.
