COVID-19 related challenges to the information exchange in the emergency department

ABSTRACT
The spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in the last two years has become a pandemic. The changed epidemiological situation in the world and our country has had a strong negative impact on the health care system, with emergency medical care system facing the most pronounced challenges. The analysis of these challenges throughout COVID-19 pandemic, as well as the actions taken by the medical support managerial bodies at diff erent levels, both nationally and globally, clearly proved the need and importance of properly planned and timely conducted, directed, comprehensible and unambiguous exchange of information within the medical structures and between the medical community and the population. The aim of the study is to analyze the main challenges and measures taken by the management of the emergency department to increase the effi ciency of information exchange throughout COVID-19 pandemic. methods:

By the means of the descriptive and comparative methods the main challenges defi ned by the medics of the emergency department are analyzed and presented. The data were collected through an individual interview on eight topics of all the 117 employees in the emergency department of the University Hospital "St. George" - Plovdiv, in April 2020. The presented analysis of the results of the study proved the need for targeted actions by the management of the emergency medical unit at the University Hospital "St. George" - Plovdiv.

Conclusions:

The results of the study on information exchange shortcomings at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic proved the need of performance of targeted measures for provision of information to employees in the emergency department in order to increase the resilience of the department in a biological area of damage.
