ABSTRACT

Purpose:

Dysphagia due to cranial nerve neuritis is a rare complication of varicella-zoster virus reactivation. In this case report, we describe a single patient diagnosed with varicella-zoster virus meningitis with acute onset dysphagia, the instrumental assessments and interventions employed by speech-language pathologists (SLPs), and discuss the role of these clinicians in the management of these patients.

Conclusion:

The results of this case study demonstrate the importance of a multidisciplinary team approach and the vital role of SLPs in the evaluation and treatment of dysphagia of unknown etiology.
