ABSTRACT
This article focuses on recent developments in microfluidic, lab on a chip technologies to enable point of care (POC) medical diagnostic devices, which can detect and monitor diseases outside of hospital settings. We provide a summary of the techniques to interface biological samples from macro-world to micro environments, on-chip processing steps to extract, isolate and transfer biomarkers of interest, and recent approaches to integrate advanced detection technologies in portable and easy to use devices. We highlight different applications of the proposed technologies, and review microfluidic methods proposed for the detection of infectious diseases such as COVID-19 caused by the novel Corona Virus. © 2023 Elsevier Ltd.
