Investigation Of Covid-19 Pandemic Process In Terms Of Professional Competences Of Teacher Candidates

ABSTRACT
The aim of this study is to examine the professional competencies of teacher candidates in COVID-19. The research was designed as a qualitative case study. The partcipants of this research are 44 senior-year teacher candidates in nine departments of the education faculty at a state university in the south of Turkey. In the selection of the participants, the maximum diversity sampling strategy was used as purposeful sampling type. The data of the research were obtained by personal information form and semi-structured interview form. Findings obtained from content analysis revealed that, 40.9% of the teacher candidates consider themselves “competent”, 38.6% of them “need development” and 20.5% of them feel “incompetent”. Among the sub-domains of professional competences, the teacher candidates consider themselves competent in “attitudes and values” (68.2%), and feel less competent in “vocational domain knowledge” and “vocational skills” sub-domains. In addition, the Online Teaching Practice course affected the professional competencies of teacher candidates negatively. Lastly, teacher candidates mostly had positive thoughts about inauguration in the pandemic process after graduation and they believe that they can overcome difficulties, feel themselves competent, and have required motivation to adapt to the pandemic. © 2019,MÍllî EğÍtÍm.All rights reserved.
