Carollia perspicillata, a tropical species, isthe only bat that has essentially been domesticated and can bemaintained and propagated in a researchenvironment utilizingsimple, inexpensive husbandryprocedures. This atlas contains thefirst qualitytreatment of a bat species, and is unique in its useof NeuN staining. The NeuN preparations used selectively stainneurons in a sharp black coloration that fills not only the cellbody but extends a short distance along the proximal dendrites. Thus, as distinct from the traditional nissl stains, the NeuNgenerates a quasi Golgi-like image of the neurons, providing a moreintimate view of the neurons than can be obtained from nisslstaining. In addition, the background is essentially white, facilitating high-contrast photography and allowing for gray-toneillustration without any loss of information. The NeuN proceduredoes not stainaxons, and since it does not stainglial cells ortheir nuclei, the noise ordinarily generated in nissl stains by thepresence of glial cells among the neurons and in the white matteris entirely eliminated. ÿ The Forebrain Atlas of theShort-tailed Fruit Bat also includes nissl stained sections forcomparison. Since it is known that NeuN is not expressed in certainneurons, such as Purkinje cells, olfactory bulb mitral cells, andthe cells of the paraventricular and supraoptic nuclei, the nisslstained sections are also included to provide complementary viewsof such structures.
