The worldwide water crisis has mobilized governments to take action on the development of new brackish water extraction techniques to obtain drinking water. Some countries in the Americas, Asia and Europe use the sea water desalination process to produce drinking water. In some cases, this technique is responsible for most of the water available to the local population. This process has been used, despite the high costs and formation of a byproduct. Brine is high salinity waste water, which is a pollutant in the environment. The water desalination technique can be a great tool for minimizing water supply problems, but it should be further enhanced in developing countries, implementing processes for reuse of brine.
