The present study was conducted to assess the effectiveness of lifestyle intervention based on yoga in the management of dyslipidemia in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. The study was carried out in the Holistic Medicine out-patient department and Diabetic Clinic, Medical College, Trivandrum, Kerala, India. 100 Type 2 diabetic patients with dyslipidemia in the age group 35-55 years were randomized into control and yoga groups. The yoga group underwent a combination of meditation, breathing exercises and yogic asanas daily for one hour along with the administration of oral hypoglycemic drugs for a period of three months. The control group was prescribed oral hypoglycemic drugs only and did not practice yoga during this period. The serum cholesterol, triglyceride, HDL and LDL in both the groups were assessed and compared at the start and at the end of the three months. For data analysis SPSS Version 12 was used And paired and unpaired t tests were performed. After intervention with yoga for a period of three months the study group showed a significant decrease in total cholesterol [P<0.01], triglycerides [P<0.05] and LDL [p<0.01] when compared to their values before yogic intervention. There was improvement in HDL level, but not to a statistically significant level [p>0.05]. Yoga, being a lifestyle incorporating exercise, stress management training and dietary alteration, targets the elevated lipid levels through multiple approaches and will allow patients with diabetes to lead longer healthier lives
