Durante fines del siglo XVIII y primeras décadas del siglo XIX, los médicos peruanos estuvieron comprometidos con las ideas libertarias. Este compromiso supuso un importante alejamiento de las nuevas corrientes científicas médicas que se desarrollaban en Europa bajo la Ilustración. En 1821, por la activa participación de los médicos en la lucha por la independencia del país, a la antiguaescuela médica regia sanfernandina se le cambió el nombre por Colegio de la Independencia.
During the end of the 18th century and first decades of the 19th century, the Peruvian medical doctors were involved with the libertarian ideas. This involvement supposed an important shifting away from the new medical scientific tendencies that were developing in Europe under the Age of Enlightenment. In 1821, because of the active participation of the medical doctors in the fighting for the independence of the country, the old royal San Fernando school of medicine was renamed as Colegio de la Independencia.
