El
virus Chikungunya es un
arbovirus re-emergente de amplia expansión en la última década, pertenece al
género Alfavirus,
familia Togaviridae. Los vectores responsables de su
transmisión son
Aedes aegypti y
Aedes albopictus, las mismas especies que transmiten el
virus del dengue. La
infección por este
virus causa fiebre de aparición abrupta,
dolor de espalda, mialgias,
cefalea y brote, pero la característica predominante es la presencia de poliartralgias, con compromiso de pequeñas y grandes
articulaciones, que pueden llegar a ser incapacitante y en algunos
casos puede durar por varios años.
Chikungunya fue aislado por primera vez en
humanos en
Tanzania, en 1952, pero desde el 2005 re-emerge con importantes
brotes en países de
áfrica,
Asia, el
Océano índico y Europa. A finales del 2013, se notificaron los primeros
casos de
transmisión autóctona de este
virus en Las
Américas. El brote se inició en las
islas del Caribe y de
allí se dispersó a otros países de la región, incluido
Colombia. Este artículo contiene diferentes aspectos de esta
enfermedad para que el
personal de salud pueda brindar un
diagnóstico oportuno y un manejo adecuado a los
pacientes con
infección por el virus Chikungunya.
Chikungunya virus is a re-emerging
arbovirus widely distributed in the last decade. The
virus belongs to the genus
Alphavirus,
family Togaviridae. The vectors responsible of the
transmission are
Aedes aegypti and
Aedes albopictus, the same species that transmit
dengue virus.
Infection with this
virus causes abrupt onset of
fever,
back pain,
myalgia,
headache and
rash, but the dominant characteristic is the presence of
polyarthralgia, with involvement of small and large
joints, which can become disabling and in some cases may last for several years. Chikungunya was first isolated in
humans, in
Tanzania, in 1952, but since 2005 reemerges with important
outbreaks in countries of
Africa,
Asia,
Indian Ocean and
Europe. In late 2013, the first cases of local
transmission of this
virus were reported in the
Americas. The outbreak began in the
Caribbean Islands and from there has spread to other countries in the region, including
Colombia. This article is contains different aspects about of this
disease for that
health workers can provide opportune
diagnosis and appropriate management to the
patients with chikunguya
virus infection.
