Introduction:

The growing number of people aged greater than or equal to 60 years is a worldwide phenomenon.

Objective:

To identify the main causes of morbidity and mortality among men and women aged greater than or equal to 60 years living in the Federal District in the year of 1999 and 2009.

Method:

The study was conducted using secondary data available from the Department of Informatics of the SUS.

Results:

The causes of mortality that presented the highest rates bothin 1999 and in 2009, for both sexes, were diseases of the circulatorysystem, followed by cancer. Were identified as major causes of hospitalization in 1999 and 2009, circulatory diseases, followed by respiratory diseases. In 1999, in both sexes, was found more frequently hospitalized for diseases of the circulatory and respiratory systems. Already in 2009, it was found higher frequency of hospitalization for cardiovascular diseases and cancers in men and by diseases of the circulatory and respiratory systems in women.

Conclusion:

Interventions more effective should occur from public policies that encourage adherence to the care of men with their health,with preventive measures in younger age groups. It is suggested to conductfurther studies that aim to monitor possible changes in morbidityand mortality in the elderly population, in order to point to the directionof public policy more effective and efficient prevention.(AU)
