Natural protected areas are an important interface between wildlife and human populations. Considering public health awareness of Leptospirosis and a shortage of epidemiological studies involving Leptospira spp. in natural areas, it was established a serological investigation study for Leptospira spp. antibodies on wild marsupial and rodents at Rasa island, located on the Environmental Protection Area of Guaraqueçaba, Paraná State coast, Brazil. Monthly, from September 2004 to July 2005, blood samples were surveyed after capturing these wild animal species on 74 live traps. None of the 25 samples tested positive to Leptospira sp., suggesting that marsupials and wild rodents do not play an important role yet on the maintenance of this disease agent on the coastal ecosystem studied. This survey is a first step towards the comprehension of the disease cycle on this island and the role played by wild mammals on it at this site. Also presents subsidies for the evaluation of the ecosystem health status, thus allowing monitoring of the effectiveness of Natural Protected Areas in maintain wildlife health integrity.
