ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: This study aimed to examine the relationship between self-disclosure, empathy, and anxiety in nurses. DESIGN AND METHODS: The study was conducted with 255 nurses working in hospitals in Turkey. Data were collected using a Sociodemographic Form, the Self-Disclosure Scale (SDS), the Basic Empathy Scale (BES), and the Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI). FINDINGS: A statistically significant positive relationship was found among the SDS, BES, and Spielberger STAI. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: Psychiatric nurses should ensure the reduction of nurses' anxiety levels by planning different interventions such as psychotherapy, counseling, and training. They may determine nurses' self-disclosure and empathy skills as well as their needs.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Computed tomography (CT) evaluation systematics has become necessary to eliminate the difference of opinion among radiologists in evaluating COVID-19 CT findings. INTRODUCTION: The objectives of this study were to evaluate the efficiency of CO-RADS scoring system in our patients with COVID-19 as well as to examine its correlation with clinical and laboratory findings. METHODS: The CO-RADS category of all patients included in the study was determined by a radiologist who did not know the rtRT-PCR test result of the patients, according to the Covid-19 reporting and data system of Mathias Prokop et al. Results: A total of 1338 patients were included. CT findings were positive in 66.3%, with a mean CO-RADS score of 3,4 ± 1,7. 444 (33.1%) of the patients were in the CO-RADS 1-2, 894 (66.9%) were in the CO-RADS 3-5 group. There were positive correlations between CO-RADS score and age, CMI, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, chronic pulmonary diseases presence of symptoms, symptom duration, presence of cough, shortness of breath, malaise, CRP, and LDH, while CORADS score was negatively correlated with lymphocyte count. The results of the ROC analysis suggested that those with age ≥40 years, symptom duration >2 days, CMI score >1 and/or comorbid conditions were more likely to have a CO-RADS score of 3-5. CONCLUSION: The CO-RADS classification system is a CT findings assessment system that can be used to diagnose COVID-19 in patients with symptoms of cough, shortness of breath, myalgia and fatigue for more than two days.

ABSTRACT

AIMS: The high level of self-efficacy that facilitates the adaptation of patients to their new lives and accelerates the healing process after open heart surgery has a positive effect on sexual function. The aims of the study are to examine the self-efficacy and sexual function of patients undergoing open heart surgery and factors affecting it. METHODS AND RESULTS: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted with 76 patients (44 females, 32 males). The data were collected with an information form, Barnason Efficacy Expectation Scales (BEES): Cardiac Surgical Version, Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), International Index of Erectile Dysfunction (IIEF), and Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI). The mean age of the patients was 63.12 ± 7.91. It was found that 30.3% of the patients (73.9% female and 26.1% male) were sexually inactive, and they did not receive information about sexual function. The mean BEES: Cardiac Surgical Version score was 43.96 ± 6.07. The mean IIEF score was 19.07 ± 26.0, and the mean FSFI score was 15.67 ± 9.12. There was a positive correlation between BEES: Cardiac Surgical Version and IIEF (r = 0.34; P = 0.00), and there was a negative correlation between BEES: Cardiac Surgical Version and FSFI (r = -0.27; P = 0.01). CONCLUSION: It was determined that patients did not have sufficient information about sexual life after open heart surgery. The patients had sexual problems after surgery. It was found that sexual function increased with increasing self-efficacy in men, while sexual function decreased with increasing self-efficacy in women.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To determine the psychometric properties of the Turkish version of the compassionate communication scale (CCS). DESIGN AND METHODS: The methodological and cross-sectional study design was used. The study was conducted with 319 nursing students in Turkey. Data were collected using an information form, the CCS, and the compassionate love scale. FINDINGS: The explanatory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis results confirmed the three-factor structure of the scale. Cronbach's α, item-total correlation, test-retest analysis, and equivalent form analysis showed high reliability. The Turkish version of CCS is a valid and reliable instrument for evaluating sensitive communication. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: CCS is a valid and reliable instrument to evaluate the communication skills of nursing students.

ABSTRACT

AIMS: To determine the effects of compassionate love on burnout and professional commitment in nurses. BACKGROUND: Compassionate love as 'other-centred' love is referred to as altruistic love, unconditional love and unreciprocated love. Compassionate love has an important role among nurses in moderating burnout and increasing professional commitment. METHODS: One-hundred ninety-four nurses working at two public hospitals in Turkey completed four self-report instruments: socio-demographics, the Compassionate Love Scale, the Burnout Measure-Short Version and the Nursing Professional Commitment Scale. RESULTS: A statistically significant inverse relationship was found between Compassionate Love Scale and Burnout Measure-Short Version scores, while Compassionate Love Scale scores were significantly and positively associated with Nursing Professional Commitment Scale scores. Participants with children had higher Compassionate Love Scale scores while those participating in the arts had lower Burnout Measure-Short Version scores. Nurses with intensive care experience had higher Nursing Professional Commitment Scale scores. CONCLUSION: There is a positive relationship between compassionate love and professional commitment, a negative relationship between compassionate love and burnout. Further research is needed to test compassionate love interventions. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING MANAGEMENT: Nurse managers may use the results of this study in encouraging and rewarding acts of compassionate love towards colleagues and patients.
