ABSTRACT

A study of proanthocyanidin and anthocyanin composition and concentrations in seed and skin extracts of two Croatian native red grape cultivars (Plavac mali and Babic) by HPLC-UV-Fluo/MS analysis was conducted in this work. A sensory analysis of extracts astringency and bitterness intensity was also performed. In the seeds, Babic showed generally higher concentrations of proanthocyanidins, while in the skins, Plavac mali showed higher concentrations of proanthocyanidins and anthocyanins. Babic proanthocyanidin seed fractions, greater in polymer size and percentage of galloylation, were perceived to be significantly more astringent. Babic proanthocyanidin skin fractions, greater in polymer size and lower in percentage of galloylation and prodelphinidins, were perceived to be significantly bitterer, but only in polymeric fractions. A positive correlation was found between the degree of polymerization, the percentage of galloylation and astringency intensity in the seeds. A negative correlation was found between the percentage of prodelphinidins and bitterness intensity in the skins.

ABSTRACT

Real-time sonography of 12 cases with Wilms' tumour confirmed by the pathohistological finding was presented according to the ultrasonographic picture and the possibilities of radiotherapeutic treatment in dependence of the degree of disease. Uniform, irregularly reflective appearance of the tumourous tissue was observed in 58.3% of the patients, while the areas of necrosis and/or hemorrhage and cystic degeneration in the tumour accounted for 41.7%. Clear determination between the tumour and the normal parenchyma of the kidney was confirmed in 66.6% of the cases, while visualization of the normal tissue of the kidney was not possible in 25% of the patients. The treatment of patients with Wilms' tumour was narrowly coordinated by the program consisting of the surgical extirpation of the tumour, postoperative irradiation of the tumorous area at degrees II, III, IV and V and intensive adjuvant chemiotherapy.

ABSTRACT

In the group of 391 examined children in the third trimester of their life the mean values have been established for the principal hematological parameters of the red family (hemoglobin = 11,52 +/- 0,87 g/100 ml, hematocrit = 36,12 +/- +/- 3,12%), as well as anemia frequency which is 29,06% if the lower lewel of the normal hemoglobin value is 11 g/100 ml for that period of infants' life. These investigations have been stated statistically significant lower hemoglobin values and a higher anemia frequency in group of infants with low weight at birth (17,5 of anemic children were prematurely born, and 55,38% weighted under 3.250 g. at their birth), than in the group of infants with non-adequate nutrition, and among infants with frequent infections. The prophylactic measures were suggested to decrease frequency of sideropenic anemia - the most widely spread type of anemia in early life of children.
