ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of nasal septum deviation on the pharyngeal airway and craniocervical posture measurements using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). METHODS: This retrospective study analyzed the CBCTs of 25 patients with and without nasal septum deviation. Various parameters defining the pharyngeal airway and craniocervical and facial skeletal morphology were measured and compared between the groups after confirming intra-examiner reliability. RESULTS: Compared to the control group, the group with nasal septum deviation had a statistically significantly shorter nasopharyngeal length (p < 0.001), longer vertical airway length (p < 0.002), and larger cervical column curvature angle (p < 0.006). CONCLUSION: Children with a nasal septum deviation of 4 mm or more on their CBCT scan are susceptible to unfavorable pharyngeal airway and craniocervical postural changes.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Although most of the studies investigated color stability of different restorative materials, evaluation of color stability of composites after immersion in multiple beverages in the same day by an in vitro oral simulation study is unclear. OBJECTIVE: To assess color change of different restorative materials at the end of days 1, 14, and 30 of immersion in multiple liquid types to mimic the oral environment in vitro. METHOD: Ten disc-shaped specimens were made from each of four different resin composites (Filtek Z250, Voco x-tra base, Beautifil Flow Plus, Beautifil II). Baseline color value of each sample was measured using a spectrophotometer. Each composite was respectively immersed in coffee, an orange/pomegranate juice mixture, black tea, and a mouth rinse on the same day to mimic daily liquid consumption of individuals. Color measurements were taken after 1, 14, and 30 days by spectrophotometer and color change values were calculated. Statistical analyses were executed by one-way ANOVA/Tukey HSD and repeated-measures ANOVA. RESULTS: All materials showed significant color change after 1, 14, and 30 days (P < 0.01) of immersion in liquids, with the lowest color alteration observed at the 1st day and the highest observed after the 30th day. Among the materials tested, at each time point (1, 14, and 30 days), the lowest color alteration was detected in Filtek Z250 and the highest color alteration was detected in Beautifil II. CONCLUSION: Color alteration of composite resins is affected by composite type and storage time. With the exception of 1 day of storage, color changes of all materials were substantial and clinically unacceptable.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate (CPP-ACP) on the buffering capacity of saliva and plaque pH in individuals with cerebral palsy (CP). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 15 3- to 8-year-old subjects with CP living in a governmental institution were included in this study. Dental plaque pH and the buffering capacity of saliva were measured at the first visit (baseline) and accepted as control values. CPP-ACP complex (GC Tooth Mousse) was applied to the children twice a day. Measurements were repeated after the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 6th and 8th weeks. RESULTS: Plaque indicator data show decreased acidogenicity in the 8-week period. Although there were no significant differences between the baseline and the 1st, 2nd and 3rd weeks' pH scores, a statistically significant difference was observed between the initial and 4th, 6th and 8th weeks' plaque pH scores. Saliva buffer scores were found to statistically significant increase between baseline and the 3rd, 4th, 6th and 8th weeks. CONCLUSION: Daily application of 10% w/v CPP-ACP paste is effectively changes saliva buffering capacity and plaque pH, thus promoting caries prevention in the primary and mixed dentition of CP children.

ABSTRACT

Neuroblastoma (NBL), a malignant embryonic tumor derived from neural crest cells, is the most common tumor worldwide among children less than 1 year of age. Metastasis to the mandible is uncommon. This article reports the case of a 15-month-old male diagnosed with NBL with bone metastasis including the mandible which resulted in severe tooth mobility. Dentists or pediatricians should consider the primary or metastatic tumors of the maxillofacial region in the differential diagnosis in children presenting with premature loss of teeth related to tooth mobility.
