Given the increase of congenital anomalies, Guillain-Barré syndrome, and other neurological and autoimmune syndromes in areas where Zika virus is circulating and their possible relation to the virus, the Pan American Health Organization / World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) recommends its Member States establish and maintain the capacity to detect and confirm Zika virus cases, prepare healthcare facilities for the possible increase in demand at all healthcare levels and specialized care for neurological syndromes, and to strengthen antenatal care. In addition, Member States should continue efforts to reduce the presence of mosquito vectors through an effective vector control strategy and public communication.

This document provides interim guidance for effective risk communication around Zika virus transmission and potential complications. Although Zika virus was first identified in humans in 1952, few outbreaks have been documented. Recently, increased rates of neurological complications including microcephaly and Guillain-Barré syndrome have been reported in the context of Zika virus outbreaks and increased circulation, particularly in the Americas. This interim guidance should be used as a reference for communicators from a range of sectors to align with ongoing Zika virus communication efforts.

This document was developed by PAHO/WHO based on antenatal care recommendations, together with the data and evidence currently available on the impact of the Zika virus on pregnant women. These considerations are based on four overarching principles, as follows: health care providers, administrators, and policymakers should ensure that the sexual and reproductive rights of pregnant women, the privacy of pregnant women infected with Zika virus should be respected during care, education and provision of services should be based on accurate, up-todate scientific information, so as to discourage harmful practices and access to information and comprehensive services should be provided to all pregnant women, voluntarily, without discrimination or coercion, and respecting individual choices.
