ABSTRACT

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a malignant tumor of the colon and rectum. It can be cured if detected in the early stage through established screening programs. CRC screening is the best way to improve cancer morbidity and mortality. Various approaches such as stool tests, virtual colonoscopy, and sigmoidoscopy are available for early detection. On average, a person after reaching the age of 45 should begin the screening process for CRC periodically for 5 years. Our study aims to measure the population's awareness and knowledge of the effect of CRC screening on CRC outcomes. A cross-sectional study questionnaire was designed and distributed among Saudi residents of the Al-Qunfudah region. A total of 385 participants replied: 55.8% of the participants were males, 78.8% of the study participants mentioned that they had heard about CRC, and 27.3% reported that CRC is common in Al-Qunfudah. In addition, 62.1% knew that CRC is more common in men but only 32.2% had a good awareness level. Moreover, 16.4% of the participants reported that they had received a colonoscopy/sigmoidoscopy; 69.9% did not think of the colonoscopy/sigmoidoscopy procedure as the main barrier to undergoing early screening for CRC. Good awareness regarding CRC was demonstrated in 34.4% of highly educated participants, which was directly associated with levels of education. In conclusion, much more awareness regarding CRC screening is needed in the Al-Qunfudah region. Educational seminars and programs should be made mandatory, and the healthcare system should focus on high-risk individuals.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Hidradenocarcinoma is an uncommon slow-growing malignant tumor that originates from sweat glands, it is most seen in the head and neck, and present typically as hard asymptomatic nodule. Diagnosis is confirmed by histopathology and immunohistochemistry, and wide local excision is the mainstay of the treatment. In our study, we discuss the approach and management of this rare disease, with focusing on the importance of histopathology in diagnosing such cases. PRESENTATION OF CASE: We present a very rare case of a 58-year-old female who presented with painless slow growing forehead swelling for 2 years, with clinical feature suggestive of lipoma. The patient underwent surgical excision, and post-operative histopathological examination of the specimen was consistent with nodular hidradenocarcinoma. DISCUSSION: Hidradenocarcinoma is a very rare malignant tumor that was first reported in 1954. This tumor was reported to be more common in males, and the incidence increases with age. The origin of hidradenocarcinoma is mostly de novo. The definitive diagnosis requires histopathological examination, and wide local excision is the mainstay of the treatment. CONCLUSION: Hidradenocarcinoma is a very rare sweat gland malignancy, and the diagnosis can be challenging. In our study, we emphasize the importance of raising the awareness among the surgical oncology society regarding this rare tumor, and we discuss the approach and management of such an uncommon disease, with focusing on the importance of histopathology in diagnosing such cases.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Isolated Colon injury due to blunt abdominal trauma is very rare. Due to lack of a definitive diagnostic method; it's very challenging to detect such injury and this will lead to delay in treatment and subsequently resulting in high morbidity and mortality. The current literature is relatively sparse concerning the management of blunt colon injuries. CASE PRESENTATION: Here, we report a case of a 17-year-old male patient with isolated sigmoid injury presented 5 days after MVC. He underwent sigmoid resection and end colostomy followed by reversal 6 weeks later. Currently, the patient is disease-free with a completely healed wound. CONCLUSION: The purpose behind this paper is to raise clinical suspicion regarding delayed presentation of blunt abdominal trauma and it effect on operative decision, so that timely diagnosis and proper management could be carried out. And to discuss the applicability of the defined management algorithm for penetrating colon injury on delay blunts colonic injury.

ABSTRACT

Meckel's diverticulum is a common congenital anomaly found in ∼2% of the population, its classic location aiding in its diagnostic criteria, is the anti-mesenteric side of the distal ileum. However, reported cases of Meckel's diverticula found on the mesenteric side, are present but rare. Here we report a case of a perforated mesenteric Meckel's diverticulum with synchronised anti-mesenteric Meckel's diverticulum, in a 70-year-old male, initially misdiagnosed as left strangulated inguinal hernia. The purpose behind this paper is to raise clinical suspicion regarding this rare pathology, so that timely diagnosis and management could be carried out.

ABSTRACT

Necrotizing fasciitis is a life-threatening aggressive soft tissue infection which usually affects the extremities, abdominal wall, or perineum. Breasts are rarely affected, with most cases presenting after trauma or surgical intervention. It may be misdiagnosed as abscess or cellulitis, leading to treatment delays. Here, we report a case of necrotizing fasciitis affecting both breasts in a 60-year-old female. Treatment included core biopsy managed with intravenous antibiotic and surgical debridement followed by a simple mastectomy. Currently, the patient is disease-free with a completely healed wound.
