ABSTRACT

By the use of fura-2 and digital imaging techniques, [K]o depolarization or PAF (10(-9) M) were shown to induce a sustained increase of [Ca]i in human or canine single aortic vascular endothelial cells (VEC) that was insensitive to nifedipine but sensitive to (-)-PN200-110 or to lowering of [Ca]o. The PAF-induced effect on [Ca]i was blocked by the PAF receptor antagonist, WEB2170. Our results suggest that [K]o depolarization and PAF increase [Ca]i via the activation of R-type Ca2+ channels.

ABSTRACT

This paper presents a survey of the experience gathered in the field of acute cholecystitis at the Sherbrooke University Hospital from 1969 to 1988. Diagnosis of acute cholecystitis in the absence of stone (according to histopathological criteria) was made in 26 cases. The relative number of such cases increased over the last 10 years of the study. Risk factors together with clinical and paraclinical data have been analyzed. Sonography is the diagnostic test of choice. Gall-bladder scanning is a useful adjuvant in cases of doubtful or negative sonography. Gangrene and/or perforation of the gall-bladder was reported in 57.7% of patients. Cholecystectomy was selectively performed in 23 of 24 cases when diagnosis was established in vivo. Cholecystectomy and percutaneous drainage are discussed.

ABSTRACT

Twenty-four autologous vein grafts taken from the upper extremities were used in 13 patients undergoing aortocoronary bypass procedures. All of these patients had had previous bilateral saphenous vein stripping. Clinical follow-up between 3 months and 6 1/2 years is reported. Ten patients were recatheterized. There was neither operative mortality nor appreciable morbidity. All the patients are alive and well at the present time. Eleven out of 13 were in New York Heart Association (NYHA) Class I 3 months after operation. Nine patent grafts out of 10 were seen during recatheterization in 6 patients studied less than 9 months after operation. In a subgroup of 5 patients followed for more than 1 year, 2 are now in NYHA Functional Class I, 2 in Class II, and 1 in Class III. Graft patency had been determined in 4 of these patients. Five grafts out of 8 were patent, 2 of them with gross abnormalities. In conclusion, we have some reservations about the long-term fate of these grafts.

ABSTRACT

After left pneumonectomy cardiac herniation occurred and caused a new radiologic finding, "the displaced chest tube." Diagnostic pneumothorax was helpful. The emergency chest radiograph enables rapid diagnosis of this life-threatening condition.
