ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to evaluate the biocampatibility of the commercial nylon band used as bone cerclage, comparing with traditional metal cerclage wires. Twenty one rabbits and fifteen rats, healthy and without orthopedics problems were used. A commercial nylon band and a surgical stainless steel wire 0 were used in right (SN) and left (SA) rabbitss hindlimb, respectively. Otherwise, on rats SN was on the left hindlimb, and SA on the right hindlimb. Both experimental species were divided into three groups according to the end of the evaluation period. Clinical, radiographic, macroscopic and histologically evaluation were performed at 30, 60 and 150 days postoperatively. All the animals showed normal limb function differences between groups were not observed at clinical and macroscopic evaluation. On both species, radiographic changes were slightly higher on SN. Histological differences were not observed in both species. Nylon bands do not cause foreign body reaction and other histological changes in rabbits and rats.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of castration on bones in the male guinea pigs and to observe whether mechanical testing correlates with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Twelve male guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus), aged 21-27 days, and with average initial weight of 279 grams were used. The animals were equally allocated to two groups: GI - orchiectomized animals and GII - intact control animals. They underwent euthanasia at seven months following surgery. DXA measurement was performed at the mid-third of the right femoral diaphysis in the cortical region and at the left femoral neck in order to verify its correlation with results of mechanical testing. Three-point bending test of right femur and axial compression test of left femur were performed. Bone mineral density of GI was significantly lower only at femoral neck. No differences were observed in the maximum load values between GI and GII for both bending and axial compression tests. The bending test revealed lower bone stiffness in GI compared to GII, but in the axial compression test no differences between groups were observed. Only left femur showed positive correlation coefficient between maximum load and bone mineral density according to Pearson"s correlation coefficient. The results suggest that hormonal deprivation in guinea pigs induces reduction of bone mineral density, especiall

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to evaluate the acrylic-pin external fixator, type II-configuration, and cancellous bone autograft for treating complications of radius and ulna fractures in 10 dogs weighing between 1.8 and 33.6 kg. Nonunion (n=4), osteomyelitis (n=1), malunion (n=1), failure or breakage of implant (n=4) were detected, and 60 % of them were associated with previous intramedullary pin placement in the radius. The fixator frame was constructed using most of the smooth transfixation pins angled. The fixation rods were constructed by placing acrylic resin over the ends of the transfixation pins that were previously bent. In all cases fresh cancellous bone autograft was used after cleaning of the fracture site. The permanence time of the external fixator ranged from 45 days to 5 months, and the most important complication was pin loosening. Fracture healing was by minimal to moderate periosteal callus, suggesting good rigidity of the frame configuration.
