ABSTRACT
Actualmente, nadie pone en duda la capacidad de los ProgenitoresHematopoyéticos (PH) procedentes de la Sangre de Cordón Umbilical(SCU), también llamados células madre hematopoyéticas, para producirla regeneración hematopoyética en pacientes con enfermedadesde la Médula Ósea (MO). Además, la posibilidad de expansiónex-vivo y la terapia génica aplicada a estos PH amplían las aplicacionesterapéuticas de la SCU. Dada la importancia de estas aplicaciones,los objetivos de este artículo son recordar a los profesionalessanitarios las características de las células madre y sus posibilidadescomo tratamiento, difundir la técnica correcta de recogida y manipulaciónde la SCU e informar de la situación legal actual en España,para mejorar la información que se puede facilitar a los ciudadanosque la soliciten y fomentar la donación de SCU
At present nobody questions the capacity of hematopoietic progenitors(HP) from umbilical cord blood (UCB), also called hematopoieticstem cells to produce hematopoietic regeneration in patients sufferingfrom bone marrow disease (BM). Also, the possibility of ex vivo expansionand gene therapy applied to these HP extend the therapeuticapplications of UCB cells. Given the importance of these applications,the objectives of this paper are to remind health professionals of thecharacteristics of stem cells and their possibilities as treatment, to disseminatethe correct technique for the collection and handling of UCBcells and to inform on the current legal scenario in Spain. These measureswill help improve the level information that is given to those individualsof the population that might ask for information relatingthis subject and to promote the donation of umbilical cord blood
