ABSTRACT
The D0 Collaboration has measured the inclusive jet cross section in barpp collisions at square root of s = 630 GeV. The results for pseudorapidities (eta)<0.5 are combined with our previous results at square root of s = 1800 GeV to form a ratio of cross sections with smaller uncertainties than either individual measurement. Next-to-leading-order QCD predictions show excellent agreement with the measurement at 630 GeV; agreement is also satisfactory for the ratio. Specifically, despite a 10% to 15% difference in the absolute magnitude, the dependence of the ratio on jet transverse momentum is very similar for data and theory.
ABSTRACT
We report a search for effects of large extra spatial dimensions in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.8 TeV with the D0 detector, using events containing a pair of electrons or photons. The data are in good agreement with the expected background and do not exhibit evidence for large extra dimensions. We set the most restrictive lower limits to date, at the 95% C.L. on the effective Planck scale between 1.0 and 1.4 TeV for several formalisms and numbers of extra dimensions.

Because high-dose oral dexamethasone therapy has been reported to be effective for adults with idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura, we assessed the short-term efficacy and toxicity of dexamethasone in seven children with chronic or refractory idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura. Dexamethasone therapy was effective and well tolerated; further long-term studies are warranted.

Eighteen patients with symptomatic radioscaphoid arthritis had scaphoid excision and capitolunate arthrodesis. Eight patients also had a silicone scaphoid replacement. The follow-up period averaged 3 years. Fusion was solid in 12 cases at an average of 8 weeks, and pain was significantly less at follow-up evaluation. Six patients had a pseudarthrosis and five had persistent pain. Immobilization in the pseudarthrosis group averaged 6 weeks, which was significantly less than the group that fused. Two patients underwent successful repeat fusions. Wrist extension averaged 26 degrees, flexion 34 degrees, radial deviation 11 degrees, and ulnar deviation 24 degrees. Grip strength averaged 25 kg. Presence of an implant had no significant effect on motion or strength. Pin track infection and pseudarthrosis were the main complications. Pain relief, functional motion, good strength, and patient satisfaction can be expected after scaphoid excision and solid capitolunate arthrodesis. Kirschner wires should be buried subcutaneously to avoid infection. The addition of a scaphoid implant offered no advantage over simple scaphoid excision.

The synthesis of various substituted nitroimidazoles with lipophilic and hydrophilic side chains as potential radiosensitizing agents is described. The starting material employed was 4(5)-nitroimidazole, which was alkylated via the sodium salt with various chloro-methylated, substituted alcohols and esters, in order to obtain analogues of misonidazole, metronidazole and desmethylmisonidazole of known radiosensitizing and bactericidal activity. Some final products were assayed for their radiosensitizing properties giving negative results under the testing conditions used.

The synthesis of 1-substituted, acyclic nucleoside derivatives of 5(6)-nitrobenzimidazoles and their pharmacological evaluation as antiviral compounds is described. The compounds were synthesized using 5(6)-benzimidazole as starting material with the appropriate chloromethylated substituted alcohols to obtain analogues of the known antiviral compounds, Acyclovir and Ganciclovir. The antiviral activity of these compounds was evaluated using strains of Herpes Simplex 1 and Poliovirus 1 and were found to be inactive as antiviral compounds under the testing conditions employed.

Land mines produce devastating injuries which are usually fatal. In Guantanamo Bay, there have been no survivors from close range, functioning antipersonnel mines of the M-16 series. All 15 antipersonnel mine fatalities suffered extremity amputation. Seven of the 15 patients suffered immediately fatal head, neck, or truncal injuries (Type I injury). The three patients who underwent hospital resuscitation had extremity amputation but were spared major head, neck, or truncal injury. It is in this group of injured that potentially salvageable patients can be identified; for them aggressive rescue and resuscitation must be performed. Those with Type II injuries are the highest priority in any triage plan. In a mass casualty or combat casualty scenario, Type II patients, in particular those with high bilateral above-the-knee amputations, may be reassigned to an expectant treatment category so as to allow the main focus on more salvageable patients. The prehospital management plan emphasizes rapid assessment and triage of patients, use of tourniquets to control extremity hemorrhage, supplemental oxygen or endotracheal intubation if possible, neck immobilization, use of the extremity section of the pneumatic antishock garment if applicable, and rapid transport to a hospital. Hospital management of these patients emphasizes aggressive resuscitation, early endotracheal intubation, and rapid volume replacement with simultaneous balanced salt solution and blood. Operative debridement with broad-spectrum antibiotic coverage and tetanus prophylaxis is performed; wounds are managed in an open fashion and frequently examined at subsequent dates in the operating room.

Using caprine arthritis-encephalitis virus antigen in the agar gel immunodiffusion test, 3729 serum samples from goats in over 112 locations around the world were tested for precipitating antibodies. Over 90 per cent of the 1265 positive samples came from Canada, France, Norway, Switzerland and the USA, all of which had 65 per cent reactors or greater. Fiji, Great Britain, Kenya, Mexico, New Zealand and Peru had fewer than 10 per cent positive samples; the majority of these could be traced to importations of goats from countries where there was a high occurrence of precipitating antibody. Somalia, Sudan and South Africa had no reactors among 306 samples. No reactors were found among 1116 samples from domestic and indigenous goats which were known to have had no contact with imported goats from countries which had a high occurrence.
