ABSTRACT
We evaluated a new integrated contact lens care system that combines fluid turbulence for lens cleaning with ultraviolet (UV) light for solution sterilization. The ultraviolet light system was used to clean and disinfect 42 soft contact lenses (water contents: 38.6%, 43%, 55%, and 70%) and two rigid gas permeable lenses. Test lenses were contaminated with 10(6) cells/mL of Bacillus pumilus, Aspergillus niger, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Acanthamoeba castellanii and subjected to a 15-minute cleaning-disinfection cycle. Bathing solutions and contact lenses were cultured at various time intervals and at the end of the cycle. All bathing solutions and all lenses but one were found to be sterile after one cycle. All units effectively disinfected solutions and contact lenses. This device may be an effective alternative to existing contact lens care systems.

We studied a group of 157 patients who had retinal detachment surgery in one eye with successful anatomical reattachment and a fellow eye without a retinal detachment. In a group of 7 out of 8 patients who had a retinal detachment that included the macula and who underwent surgery, we found that the development of macular degenerative changes was much less pronounced in the operated eye than in the fellow, control eye. In a group of 3 patients who had retinal detachment without macular involvement, the appearance of macular degenerative changes appeared to be rather symmetric in the operated and in the fellow eye. The presence of a circling buckle did not appear to have an influence on the ARMD changes. It appears that the presence of a macular detachment is a factor in modifying the natural history of age-related macular degeneration. The diminution of signs of ARMD could be related to a degree of atrophy in the retinal pigment epithelium occurring after a retinal detachment with the macula off.

Among the various causes of leukocoria in a newborn, intrauterine ocular trauma following amniocentesis is not included. We describe a three-day-old girl whose leukocoria of the left eye resulted from traction retinal detachment, caused by the perforation of the globe during diagnostic amniocentesis.

Anterior chamber constant rate perfusion studies were performed in normal living monkey eyes. On careful inspection, the IOP-flow relation was seen to consist of a three stage curve. In the low range of infusions (0-6 microliters/min) IOP raised linearly. In the middle range (6-12 microliters/min) it remained almost constant and raised, again with high infusion rates (12-25 microliters/min). Calculating outflow facility from this pressure-flow relationship, it was shown that C value was constant in the low infusion range, increased in the middle range and decreased slowly over the high infusion rate range. A comparison was made with a similar curve derived from flow of fluids through non completely collapsible tubes. The change of IOP following high infusion rates consisted of a decrease in the steady-state pressures achieved. Comparison with formerly observed close phenomena was made and some thoughts about possible causes were brought.
