ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Smoking is a public health issue in France, especially among the young. Its specificities for caregivers and health students are part of a nationwide "Tobacco-free health place" strategy, underlining the importance of individual choices and the clinical roles of future health professionals. METHOD: Prospective survey by online questionnaire, conducted in 2021 among 238 nursing students and nursing assistants in Mâcon, concerning their smoking habits, vaping and the impact of the Covid-19 health crisis, the objectives being to assess the prevalence of smoking in this population, and compare it to previous surveys and data from the literature. In addition, smoking-related behavior was observed. RESULTS: One hundred and fifty-seven out of 238 students (66%), 95% of whom were women, responded to the questionnaire, with an average age of 25.1 years (SD: 7.7). Smoking prevalence was measured at 22%. This rate has fluctuated without declining in the surveys undertaken since 2008. Vaping was practiced by 8% of respondents, three-quarters of whom were also smokers. The health crisis appeared to have aggravated smoking habits among the future caregivers, two-fifths of whom considered it embarrassing for a caregiver to smoke, whatever their own smoking status. CONCLUSIONS: Smoking prevalence has not declined in this predominantly female student population, with results similar to those elsewhere in France, Young generations of caregivers will be challenged from the standpoints of personal health and professional skills in their treatment of smokers, which it would be desirable for them to ensure without undue cognitive dissonance.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: 1. To present the prenatal cytogenetic findings and postnatal outcome of 12 cases with an isodicentric chromosome composed of the short arm of the Y chromosome.2. To review the literature and provide recommendations for cytogenetic analysis and counseling. METHODS: Prenatal and postnatal cytogenetic data and clinical findings of isodicentric Yp ascertained in six institutions were gathered and reviewed. RESULTS: Nine of the twelve cases were referred for advanced maternal age (AMA), one of which was a twin pregnancy with one twin having an increased nuchal translucency measurement. The remaining cases were referred owing to a family history of hemophilia and an abnormal maternal serum screen, respectively. Nine of these pregnancies resulted in the birth of a normal-appearing male infant with subsequent normal growth and psychomotor development. Follow-up ranged from birth to 7 years. In two cases, the pregnancy was terminated and the fetuses showed male external genitalia. In the case ascertained because of an increased nuchal translucency measurement, the prenatal diagnosis of 45,X was made. At birth, there were ambiguous genitalia, and postnatal cytogenetic studies found an isodicentric Yp. In 11 of the 12 cases, mosaicism was present. CONCLUSION: Our cases show that the prenatal finding of an isodicentric Yp, with or without 45,X mosaicism, is compatible with normal male phenotype in most cases, particularly in the absence of other anomalies. To ensure accuracy in cytogenetic reporting and prenatal counseling, the identification of a structurally abnormal or small Y chromosome, either alone or in the presence of 45,X colonies, should be followed immediately by confirmatory molecular cytogenetic investigations as well as by ultrasound determination of the phenotypic sex of the fetus.

ABSTRACT

Antibodies specifically directed to 5-methylcytidine were raised in rabbits and purified by affinity chromatography. The accessibility of 5-methyldeoxycytidine (m5dCyd) to such antibodies was studied with DNAs from various origins. The reaction was followed by measuring the retention of radiolabelled DNA by antibodies on nitrocellulose filters, by immunoprecipitation, by gel filtration and was visualized with the electron microscope. Antibodies did not bind to Escherichia coli B DNA, which is deficient in m5dCyd. Denatured and native DNA from calf thymus, which contains m5dCyd as a minor nucleoside, was weakly retained on the filters whereas DNA extracted from Xanthomonas oryzae XP12 bacteriophage, which is rich in m5dCyd, was well recognized even in the native form.

ABSTRACT

The left-handed form of poly(dG-m5dC).poly(dG-m5dC) induced by heating the copolymer in the presence of magnesium and stabilized with polyarginine can be used to raise antibodies in rabbits. These antibodies are able to recognize the Z conformation of both methylated and nonmethylated forms of the copolymers. In the same experimental conditions, hypermethylated B DNA is not recognized by these antibodies.
