ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Gamma sensory stimulation may reduce AD-specific pathology. Yet, the efficacy of alternating electrical current stimulation in animal models of AD is unknown, and prior research has not addressed intensity-dependent effects. METHODS: The intensity-dependent effect of gamma electrical stimulation (GES) with a sinusoidal alternating current at 40 Hz on Aß clearance and microglia modulation were assessed in 5xFAD mouse hippocampus and cortex, as well as the behavioral performance of the animals with the Morris Water Maze. RESULTS: One hour of epidural GES delivered over a month significantly (1) reduced Aß load in the AD brain, (2) increased microglia cell counts, decreased cell body size, increased length of cellular processes of the Iba1 + cells, and (3) improved behavioral performance (learning & memory). All these effects were most pronounced when a higher stimulation current was applied. CONCLUSION: The efficacy of GES on the reduction of AD pathology and the intensity-dependent feature provide guidance for the development of this promising therapeutic approach.

ABSTRACT

Herein, we have prepared a mixed-phase Co3O4-CoFe2O4@MWCNT nanocomposite through a cheap, large-scale, and facile ultrasonication route followed by annealing. The structural, morphological, and functional group analyses of the synthesized catalysts were performed by employing various characterization approaches such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The resultant samples were tested for bifunctional electrocatalytic activity through various electrochemical techniques: cyclic voltammetry (CV), linear sweep voltammetry (LSV), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The prepared Co3O4-CoFe2O4@MWCNT nanocomposite achieved a very high current density of 100 mA cm-2 at a lower (290 mV and 342 mV) overpotential (vs. RHE) and a smaller (166 mV dec-1 and 138 mV dec-1) Tafel slope in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), respectively, compared to Co3O4-CoFe2O4. The excellent electrochemical activity of the as-prepared electrocatalyst was attributed to the uniform incorporation of Co3O4-CoFe2O4 over MWCNTs which provides high redox active sites, a greater surface area, better conductivity, and faster charge mobility. Furthermore, the enhanced electrochemical active surface, low charge-transfer resistance (Rct), and higher exchange current density (J0) of the Co3O4-CoFe2O4@MWCNT ternary composite are attributed to its superior behavior as a bifunctional electrocatalyst. Conclusively, this study demonstrates a novel and large-scale synthesis approach for bifunctional electrocatalysts with a high aspect ratio and abundance of active sites for high-potential energy applications.

ABSTRACT

In Pakistan, 64% of the total population is under the age of 30 and unfortunately, the increasing number of young addicts in Pakistan is estimated at the distressing rate of 40,000 per year. By considering the alarming situation and scarcity of literature, this research aims to investigate the recovery phase of drug addiction by introducing a case that highlights drug addiction, recovery, and relapse in the Pakistani context. We designed a case study approach in which face-to-face interviews were used. The case under consideration is a 38 years old patient with a history of chronic addiction with episodes of recovery and relapses. The shift of approaches from the extreme end of the addiction continuum to full recovery poses an opportunity for drug rehabilitation professionals to learn factors associated with drug addiction, the recovery process, and first-hand comments on recovering interventions in Pakistan.
