ABSTRACT

Reducing the economic and environmental impact of industrial process may be achieved by the smartisation of different components. In this work, tube smartisation is presented via direct fabrication of a copper (Cu)-based resistive temperature detector (RTD) on their outer surfaces. The testing was carried out between room temperature and 250 °C. For this purpose, copper depositions were studied using mid-frequency (MF) and high-power impulse magnetron sputtering (HiPIMS). Stainless steel tubes with an outside inert ceramic coating were used after giving them a shot blasting treatment. The Cu deposition was performed at around 425 °C to improve adhesion as well as the electrical properties of the sensor. To generate the pattern of the Cu RTD, a photolithography process was carried out. The RTD was then protected from external degradation by a silicon oxide film deposited over it by means of two different techniques: sol-gel dipping technique and reactive magnetron sputtering. For the electrical characterisation of the sensor, an ad hoc test bench was used, based on the internal heating and the external temperature measurement with a thermographic camera. The results confirm the linearity (R2 > 0.999) and repeatability in the electrical properties of the copper RTD (confidence interval < 0.0005).

ABSTRACT

Superhydrophobic (SHP) and oleophobic aluminum surfaces have been prepared through the combination of a scalable chemical microtexturing process and surface functionalization with long-chained polyfluoroalkyl moieties. The effect of an anodic layer on the microtextured surface has been assessed considering surface morphology, superhydrophobicity, surface mechanical properties and corrosion protection enhancement. The surface functionalization with polyfluoroalkyl moieties has been tackled in two different ways: (i) grafting of the polyfluoroalkyl moieties and (ii) deposition of a thin hybrid coating with low content of polyfluoroalkyl-containing compound. Aluminum surfaces showing high durability in salt spray environments, which maintain SHP and oleophobic properties at least up to 2016 h have been attained. Applications for this kind of surfaces range from easy-to-clean surfaces to anti-icing or anti-condensation functionalities that could be of interest for several sectors.

ABSTRACT

Porous silica layers with outstanding antireflective properties have been prepared by acid-catalyzed sol-gel process in presence of organic phases as structure directing agents (SDA) and excess water, with the aim of offering a cost-competitive, easy up-scaling and high efficiency process that contributes to reduce current levelized cost of energy (LCOE) of concentrating photovoltaics (CPV). The process has been optimized by controlling the water/alkoxide ratio, which is an important structure-regulating tool, having a strong influence in the structural properties of sol-gel synthesized materials. Hydrolysis of the inorganic precursor has been accomplished in high water/alkoxide conditions and in the presence of SDAs. Evaporation induced self-assembly (EISA) during coating deposition and the scanning of four types of SDAs have permitted to select the coating that fulfilled specific thickness and refractive index values with, in parallel, excellent results on sol stability. The final optimization has produced mesoporous coatings with ∼9 nm mean pore size, leading to an enhancement in transmittance up to 7.4% over bare glass in the 300-1500 nm wavelength range. The transmittance spectra have been used as inputs for the theoretical calculation of the short-circuit current density of a commercially available multijunction solar cell for CPV applications.
