ABSTRACT

Metal-mediated self-assembly of chelating double-hydrophilic block copolymer has become a facile preparation strategy of great importance for the metal-chelated hybrid nanostructures. Herein, we present a delicate control over the morphology regulation of metal-chelated nanostructures by a terminal modification of polymer building blocks with mesogenic cholesterol. Such a molecular design motif at an end of chelating linear/brush-type block copolymer imparts not only additional hydrophobicity for enhanced cohesive force to facilitate the metal-mediated self-assembly, but also significant morphological alteration of a metal-chelated core that otherwise generally forms a spherical interior with cholesterol-free block copolymers. The presence of cholesterol entities localized at the central core further allows for the density modulation of the final PtII-chelated nanostructures while maintaining the colloidal stability, comparable to that of the cholesterol-free nanoparticles in physiological conditions. This metal-mediated assembly strategy with modified polymer building blocks can provide a potential platform for the delivery of inorganic agents.

ABSTRACT

[Purpose] The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of the wall slide device on activation of the scapulothoracic musculature. [Subjects] We recruited 15 healthy male subjects. [Methods] The subjects performed the general wall push-up plus (WPUP) and the wall slide with device (WSD) exercises. During the exercises, the muscle activities of the upper and lower trapezius (UT, LT), middle and lower serratus anterior (MSA, LSA), and pectoralis major (PM) were measured. [Results] The normalized muscle activity data of the WSD were significantly higher in UT, MSA and LSA than the WPUP. [Conclusion] Our results suggest that exercise using the WSD can more effectively activate the scapulothoracic musculature than the general WPUP.

ABSTRACT

A total of 25 college students participated in a study to determine when they would use an air conditioner during a lecture in a university classroom. The ambient temperature and relative humidity were measured 75 cm above the floor every minute. Skin temperatures were measured every minute at seven points, according to the recommendation of Hardy and Dubois. The average clothing insulation value (CLO) of subjects was 0.53 ± 0.07 CLO. The mean air velocity in the classroom was 0.13 ± 0.028 m/s. When the subjects turned the air conditioner both on and off, the average ambient temperatures, relative humidity and mean skin temperatures were 27.4 and 23.7 °C (p = 0.000), 40.9 and 40.0% (p = 0.528) and 32.7 and 32.2 °C (p = 0.024), respectively. When the status of the air conditioner was changed, the differences of skin temperatures in core body parts (head, abdomen and thigh) were not statistically significant. However, in the extremities (mid-lower arm, hand, shin and instep), the differences were statistically significant. Subjects preferred a fluctuating environment to a constant temperature condition. We found that a changing environment does not affect classroom study.
