ABSTRACT

Considering the sustainability of material development, coordination polymerization catalysts effective for 1,1-disubstituted olefins are receiving a great deal of attention because they can introduce a variety of plant-derived comonomers, such as ß-pinene and limonene, into polyolefins. However, due to their sterically encumbered property, incorporating these monomers is difficult. Herein, we succeeded in the copolymerization of ethylene with various hydroxy- or siloxy-substituted vinylidenes using a fluorenylamido-ligated titanium catalyst-MMAO system. This is the first example of ethylene/polar 1,1-disubstituted olefins' copolymerization using an early transition metal catalyst system. The polymerization proceeded at room temperature without pressurizing ethylene, and high-molecular-weight, functionalized polyethylene was obtained. The obtained copolymer showed a reduced water contact angle compared with that of the ethylene/isobutene copolymer, demonstrating the increment in hydrophilicity by hydroxy groups.

ABSTRACT

This study explores adsorptive removal measures to shed light on current water treatment innovations for kinetic/isotherm models and their applications to antibiotic pollutants using a broad range of biomass-based adsorbents. The structure, classifications, sources, distribution, and different techniques for the remediation of antibiotics are discussed. Unlike previous studies, a wide range of adsorbents are covered and adsorption of comprehensive classes of antibiotics onto biomass/biochar-based adsorbents are categorized as ß-lactam, fluoroquinolone, sulfonamide, tetracycline, macrolides, chloramphenicol, antiseptic additives, glycosamides, reductase inhibitors, and multiple antibiotic systems. This allows for an assessment of their performance and an understanding of current research breakthroughs in applying various adsorbent materials for antibiotic removal. Distinct from other studies in the field, the theoretical basis of different isotherm and kinetics models and the corresponding experimental insights into their applications to antibiotics are discussed extensively, thereby identifying the associated strengths, limitations, and efficacy of kinetics and isotherms for describing the performances of the adsorbents. In addition, we explore the regeneration of adsorbents and the potential applications of the adsorbents in engineering. Lastly, scholars will be able to grasp the present resources employed and the future necessities for antibiotic wastewater remediation.

ABSTRACT

Heavy metals (HMs) have attracted global attention due to their toxicity, persistence, and accumulation in aquatic fish in the polluted water environment. The consumption of these fishes exposed humans to a higher risk of non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks. In this study, we provided a critical overview of the potential sources and concentration of HMs in Nigeria's freshwater. Furthermore, we reported their pollution level in widely eaten fish species in the country. Our findings show that effluent from anthropogenic and industrial activities is one of the major sources HMs in the country. The mean concentration of Zn (9.02 mg/L), As (7.25 mg/L), Cu (4.35 mg/L), Fe (1.77 mg/L), and Pb (1.46 mg/L) in Nigeria's freshwaters were found to be high than Nigerian Standard for Drinking Water Quality permissible limit. This study demonstrated considerable health risks associated HMs via dietary consumption of different fishes from polluted waters. Therefore, we recommended an urgent need for effective management HMs in water bodies in order to protect the lives of people living in the country.
